A spider discovered in a tyre became a reason to fetch magnifying glasses. That small episode captures the character of learning at Shepherds Lane in November 2023: staff took children's discoveries seriously and helped them investigate further. Everyday play had a purpose.
Ofsted rated the nursery Outstanding at its 24 November 2023 inspection. Partou Shepherds Lane Day Nursery & Pre-School, in Mill End, Rickmansworth, accepts children from 3 months to 60 months and has 80 places in total. Those places describe the whole nursery, rather than the size of an individual group.
The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, development and care. Here, the November 2023 examples show what that meant in practice: conversation developed through dough play, construction prompted problem-solving, and books encouraged children to explore ideas together.
During that month, staff added words describing babies' actions as they shaped dough. The tap tap box, an activity involving guessing its contents, encouraged children to listen and take turns speaking. These were opportunities to build language through something children already wanted to do.
Reading also reached across ages in November 2023. Babies brought further books to adults, while older children discussed illustrations and anticipated the next part of a story together. Adults joined those conversations to stretch children's thinking. Books were shared experiences rather than simply objects to look at.
The garden brought practical learning too. In November 2023, children considered hazards that might affect their friends, connecting safety with responsibility for others. Collecting food and taking it on foot to a local food bank gave community participation a concrete form: children helped deliver what they had gathered.
At the November 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and praised the way staff worked with parents on plans for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, recognising emerging needs quickly and helping families access support.
Everyday relationships were equally tangible that month. Staff recognised babies' and toddlers' gestures indicating that they wanted music or painting, rather than relying on spoken requests. Familiar routines helped children feel settled enough to participate. For younger children, being understood before they can explain themselves is a meaningful part of care.
Communication extended beyond accounts of activities in November 2023. Parents received information about their children's development and guidance on building on it at home. Staff also used children's names during shared table activities and introduced turn-taking through language about doing things together.
The address is Shepherd's Lane, Mill End, Rickmansworth, WD3 8JJ. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with closures for bank holidays and one week at Christmas. That Christmas closure matters for families organising year-round childcare.

Shepherds Lane merits consideration for families seeking care across the year who value responsive interaction, shared reading and learning built around children's interests. Its November 2023 examples are persuasive because they show the work beneath the Outstanding judgement: adults expanded a child's discovery, recognised unspoken requests and connected garden safety with care for friends.
