Sunflower planting, paint-covered toy trucks and stories shared with toddlers give this Howard Road nursery a concrete identity beyond its Busy Bees name. Those were features of daily life in March 2022, when children explored language and materials through practical play. The strongest impression is of learning built around familiar childhood interests.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good on 10 March 2022, praising children's progress and relationships while identifying improvements needed in access to play resources and preschool routines. Both sides of that judgement matter: the warmth of the relationships was a strength, but the organisation of the day needed attention in specific rooms.
Today, the nursery has capacity for 92 children, accepting ages from 3 months to 5 years. It serves families seeking full-time attendance or morning and afternoon sessions, with weekday opening hours extending from 7am to 6.30pm.
The early years foundation stage is the required framework for children's learning, development and care: here, its practical meaning can be seen in play that develops communication, movement and independence. In March 2022, staff used children's interests and next learning steps to shape activities. Babies explored paint with plastic trucks, while adults talked about the colours mixing together. An everyday toy became a way to experiment with marks and hear new vocabulary.
Toddlers listened to favourite books with adults in March 2022, and preschool children brought their ideas and requests for help to staff. These were different stages of communication, rather than one activity applied across every age. For parents, the useful distinction is how practitioners adapt conversation and play to the child in front of them.
Preschool planting also connected an activity to language in March 2022. Children sowed sunflower seeds in a colourful bucket and practised words describing how plants grow. Outside, older children drew chalk patterns on concrete. The physical materials were simple; their value lay in the opportunities to talk, investigate and practise using their hands.
Room organisation was less consistent in March 2022. Many children could choose toys from shelves at their height and from boxes, but the new room for younger two-year-olds needed a broader selection that children could reach independently. This is a meaningful distinction for families: choosing an activity depends on being able to see and access the materials, as well as on what adults have prepared.
At the March 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities good, with parents and outside professionals involved in planning what children should learn next. These are dated judgements, with collaboration providing the concrete mechanism behind the assessment of additional support.
Key-person relationships were evident in March 2022. Practitioners rearranged responsibilities so that a child's familiar adult could handle personal care, helping maintain continuity during intimate parts of the day. Babies sought comfort from that adult before returning to play. The relationship extended beyond supervising activities.
Communication with parents in March 2022 covered both the day's experiences and children's development. This gave families something useful to carry into home life, rather than simply an account of attendance. For children approaching school, staff exchanged information with local teachers and encouraged visits where possible, sharing children's personalities, achievements and next learning steps.
Meals and snacks were balanced in March 2022, and colour-coded crockery helped staff recognise dietary or medical restrictions. Preschool mealtimes nevertheless needed better organisation: children became distracted, the room grew noisy and communication became harder, making this a practical care issue as well as a routine to improve.

Funded childcare options include 30 Hours working families funding, 15 Hours universal funding for children aged 3 and 4, and 15 hours for 2-year-olds receiving support. Access depends on eligibility. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation, so families can consider their chosen sessions alongside their funding position.
For families comparing full-time attendance with morning or afternoon care, Howard Road offers useful choices within a long weekday opening window. Its March 2022 strengths were personal relationships and practical, conversational learning, illustrated by stories, painting and planting. The decision deserves equal attention to everyday organisation: accessible toddler resources and well-managed preschool meals are the specific points to examine alongside those strengths.
