A converted church, a separate sleep room for babies and gardens divided by age give this Pembury Road nursery a recognisable character. Bright Horizons Tonbridge Day Nursery and Preschool takes children from 3 months to 5 years and has 70 places in total. Its appeal rests on practical details: space for babies to rest, outdoor exploration and music that brings numbers and rhyme into play.
At its November 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good, found safeguarding effective and recognised carefully sequenced learning, while identifying inconsistent support for counting and mathematical vocabulary. That dated judgement needs to be read alongside the later organisational safeguarding action discussed below. Full-day attendance and stretched funded hours are part of the current offer.
The baby room takes children from 3 months, combines an open play space with a separate sleep room, and adapts its arrangement to babies’ needs and home routines. This separation matters: sleeping and active play have their own spaces. A separate baby garden also gives the youngest children an outdoor area of their own.
The toddler room provides space to explore activities and practise independence. The Preschool room uses a more structured day to prepare children for school, with access to a small garden where they can move between indoor and outdoor play and grow plants. These are different stages of nursery life, with the environment changing as children become more independent.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children’s learning, development and care; in everyday language, that means learning through play, conversation, movement and exploration. Alongside it, the group-wide Bright Beginnings Curriculum supports development and preparation for room changes and school. At Tonbridge, roleplay spaces and a reading area provide concrete settings for conversation and books.
Boogie Mites adds music sessions involving rhyme and numbers. The Ready For School Programme supports confidence with reading, art, maths and writing, giving families a clear account of what school preparation involves. The emphasis is on skills children can practise, rather than an admissions advantage.
In November 2023, activities illustrated how learning changed with age: younger children handled chunky brushes, while older children used finer brushes independently. Toddlers investigated which objects floated or sank, and preschool children combined flour and water to make dough. These examples show learning through handling materials and testing ideas.
Mathematics was the weaker point in that November 2023 account. Children had materials for threading and dough-making, but adults did not consistently extend play with counting or mathematical words. Resources alone were insufficient. The improvement needed was more deliberate teaching within those activities.
A larger garden serves toddlers and preschool children, and outdoor play continues in different weather conditions. The garden is arranged to encourage movement and exploration, while the preschool planting space gives children something to care for over time.
In November 2023, children experimented in an outdoor kitchen while adults introduced vocabulary. Gardening and outings to a supermarket and library also featured in their experiences. Those ordinary local destinations brought learning beyond the nursery rooms, connecting play with places children could recognise in family life.
Settling sessions take place before children start, with their key person arranging the timing and number around each child. That makes the introduction an individual process. For a baby whose routines are already established at home, the room’s attention to those routines is a useful practical complement.
The group-wide Family app provides updates about children’s experiences and development. It gives parents another connection with the nursery day, alongside the personal relationship established through settling.
In November 2023, parents spoke each day with the key person caring for their child, and the manager held coffee mornings every few months as well as meetings about progress. Children practised taking turns in conversation, sharing activities and responding kindly to one another. Books could also be borrowed from a lending library to take home, extending reading beyond the nursery day.
In November 2023, toys and equipment were arranged so children could reach what they needed. Babies used low furniture to pull themselves upright, while older children chose activities and requested resources. Regular checks during naps and assessments of outdoor risks formed part of the care arrangements at that time.
On 22 June 2026, Ofsted recorded a Welfare Requirements Notice requiring Bright Horizons to strengthen organisational safeguarding leadership, oversight, reporting, allegation handling and staff support by 1 August 2026, specifying that the actions did not represent concerns identified at every individual setting. The June position was that the organisation had not demonstrated consistently effective safeguarding across its provision. This is material to a family’s decision, while its organisational scope must remain clear.
The address is 29 Pembury Road, Tonbridge, Kent, TN9 2JB. Full Day sessions run from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. Funded childcare is offered in sessions lasting 10 hours that begin at opening time; attendance outside the funded session is charged separately.
The nursery operates throughout the year, with closures for bank and public holidays, an inset day and the period between Christmas and New Year. Families arranging work around nursery attendance need to allow for those breaks. Enquiries can be made directly by telephone, and personal tours can be booked online.
Tonbridge Train Station is a five-minute walk away, and the nursery is a ten-minute drive from the A21. Those connections make the address relevant to families combining childcare with a rail commute or a journey by road.
Private childcare and funded childcare are offered. The 15-hour and 30-hour funded entitlements are stretched over 50 weeks, subject to eligibility, so the entitlement is spread across a longer part of the year rather than concentrated into term time. Additional privately paid hours are separate from the funded entitlement.
For privately paid care, meals and snacks are included in the fee, along with nappies, wipes and milk; the inclusion list carries a nursery-specific qualification. An on-site chef prepares fresh food, while food during funded hours is charged separately and that charge is non-mandatory, with access to a funded place not conditional on paying it.
Consumables associated with funded hours are supplied by Bright Horizons. Additional hours are also non-mandatory and are not a condition of accessing a funded place. A registration charge applies, and payments are collected monthly by direct debit in advance. Current prices come in the nursery’s written quotation.
This nursery suits families seeking full-day attendance with either privately paid childcare or funded hours spread across the year. The separate baby sleep room, age-specific gardens and individually arranged settling sessions give its offer practical substance. Boogie Mites and the Ready For School Programme add clear activities to the learning day.
The November 2023 judgement provides a positive dated assessment, with a specific weakness in mathematics to explore. The June 2026 organisational safeguarding action carries greater weight in a current decision. A visit should address its practical effect at Tonbridge alongside the everyday fit of rooms, routines and attendance.
Ofsted judged it Good at the inspection on 10 November 2023 and found safeguarding effective at that time. A later organisational Welfare Requirements Notice dated 22 June 2026 required Bright Horizons to strengthen safeguarding arrangements across its provision; it did not describe concerns at every individual setting.
Children are accepted from 3 months to 5 years. There is a baby room with a separate sleep room, a toddler room and a Preschool room with access to a small garden.
Boogie Mites uses music involving numbers and rhyme. The Ready For School Programme supports confidence in maths, reading, writing and art, alongside the group-wide Bright Beginnings Curriculum.
