In April 2023, outdoor play and growing independence were clear features of children's experience at Busy Bees Clare Park. Its preschool Friday Club connects care for nature with wellbeing and healthy living, while the nursery serves children from 3 months to 5 years at Beech Road in East Malling. This is a setting to assess through the detail of children's everyday care as well as its activities.
Ofsted graded the nursery Good on 3 April 2023. That judgement comes with two practical reservations: the organisation of care for babies and how staff explored children's cultural heritage. Both matter when choosing care, especially for a child starting young or a family wanting their home background reflected in nursery life.
The nursery opens Monday to Friday, from 7am to 6pm, throughout the year except bank holidays. It has 74 places in total.
The early years foundation stage provides the framework for learning, development and care. In parent language, it connects children's play with developing communication, movement, relationships and independence, rather than making the nursery day a sequence of formal lessons.
In April 2023, staff planned around children's interests and the skills they were ready to practise next. Communication received sustained attention. Preschool children used vocabulary about insects and the work of architects, giving concrete examples of how everyday topics could extend what children understood and could explain.
Sensory exploration also had a practical form in April 2023. Babies handled wallets containing materials such as lentils and mixtures of paint, water and oil. The materials gave them something to investigate through touch. For older children, a chase game became an opportunity to introduce mathematical ideas, connecting learning with an activity they already enjoyed.
Friday Club is a current preschool activity centred on awareness of nature, personal wellbeing and healthy lifestyles. Its value is the connection between looking after the world and looking after oneself. For families who want environmental awareness to feature in their child's early experiences, it is a concrete part of the offer to weigh.
In April 2023, children across the age groups could move freely into their own garden areas. Babies used a slide, toddlers tackled an obstacle course, and preschool children played chase. These were different physical experiences for different stages, rather than one outdoor activity shared by everyone.
Staff adjusted their help during the toddler obstacle course in April 2023: some children managed the climbing independently, while others needed an adult alongside them. That detail is useful for parents thinking about how a nursery balances physical challenge with support.
In April 2023, key persons knew children's individual interests, personalities and learning needs, and used that understanding when planning activities. Settling arrangements had also been adapted to individual children. For a family beginning nursery care, that makes the relationship with the child's main practitioner an important part of the decision.
Comfort after sleep was visible in April 2023: babies received cuddles as they woke, with time to become familiar with their surroundings again. Toddlers had visual reminders of simple behaviour expectations, and staff recognised children's achievements. Children then echoed that encouragement in their own play with friends.
Personal care was part of learning in April 2023, too. Children used a tissue station and a mirror to attend to their own faces. This is a small but useful example of independence being practised through the ordinary business of the day, rather than reserved for a separate activity.
At its April 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and described additional support for children with SEND, including a buddy arrangement that helped them participate in play and learning. Those are dated findings, rather than a promise about any individual child's support today.
There was also a clear weakness in April 2023: some babies became unsettled, and staff occasionally continued with routine jobs rather than noticing and responding fully. The improvement needed concerned the organisation of the room and the consistency of attention to the youngest children. For parents of babies, that deserves as much weight as the positive examples of comfort and sensory play.
Staff used some words from children's home languages in April 2023, but did not plan enough opportunities to explore their heritage. Language recognition and cultural understanding are related, but the latter needed more deliberate work. Staff development included ongoing training, meetings and feedback on adult interactions with children.
The address is Beech Road, East Malling, West Malling, ME19 6DY. Opening hours are 7am to 6pm on weekdays, with year-round operation and bank-holiday closures. That gives families an early opening window when comparing care with their working day.
Enquiries can be made through the branch contact form or the central enrolments team on 0330 333 8133. The branch telephone number is 01732 871300. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.
In April 2023, the nursery received funding for early education for children aged two, three and four. Families considering funded attendance should distinguish the childcare hours from any arrangements for food, non-food consumables and additional private care when assessing their quotation.
In April 2023, the nursery operated on the premises of the Malling School. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place; families still use the local authority admissions process for a state-school place.
Busy Bees Clare Park suits families looking for year-round care with an early opening, and parents of preschool children who value the environmental and wellbeing emphasis of Friday Club. The April 2023 examples of garden play, sensory exploration and everyday independence give substance to its Good judgement.
For babies, the decision needs closer attention to daily organisation and responsive care. The cultural-heritage improvement also deserves a direct conversation. Those considerations keep the choice centred on the child's experience, alongside the practical fit of the opening hours.
Ofsted rated it Good on 3 April 2023. Improvements were requested in baby-room organisation and the exploration of children's cultural backgrounds.
