Play dough carried into pretend cooking, bird feeders inspired by a robin in the garden, and swimming for older children: the February 2023 picture of Nuffy Bear Day Nursery Tunbridge Wells was full of practical, child-led learning. Its setting within a fitness and wellbeing centre gives it a recognisable character. Physical activity had a clear place in the nursery day.
At its 17 February 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall and found safeguarding effective. Those judgements belong to that visit. Whole-setting capacity is 22 children, with an overall age range from birth to five. Two nursery rooms occupy the Tunbridge Wells Fitness & Wellbeing Gym site. The youngest room accepts children from three months.
Full-day, morning and afternoon bookings give families different attendance patterns. The important distinction is between the nursery's overall capacity and the room arrangement: two rooms do not tell a parent how many children will share their child's day.
Baby accommodates children aged three months to two years, while Toddler and Pre-school brings together the two-to-three and three-to-five age bands. This separates the youngest children from the older stages, while toddlers and preschool children share the second area.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care, so the day combines play with opportunities to practise communication, movement and independence. In February 2023, children chose their play and moved materials between activities. Taking play dough into pretend cooking connected making things with imaginative play rather than keeping each activity separate.
Adults joined children's make-believe journeys and helped them find more words for their ideas. Making food for birds also drew on something children remembered: a robin seen in the garden. These were concrete examples of conversation growing from children's interests, with an everyday observation becoming material for a learning activity.
In February 2023, children could move outdoors freely during the day, with opportunities to pedal, balance, throw and kick. Older children also had swimming lessons among their weekly activities. Together, these experiences brought different kinds of movement into the week, rather than relying on seated activities alone.
Letter writing to other Nuffy Bear settings gave early writing a purpose: becoming pen pals. Children were making contact beyond their own nursery, using emerging literacy to communicate with someone else. Staff also built connections with local schools to help children prepare for moving on.
In February 2023, staff understood their key-person responsibilities and families received learning updates and assessments. Children were comforted after waking, and their opinions were displayed with their creations. Care included both reassurance and attention to what children wanted to say.
Coffee mornings and parents' evenings created opportunities for families to take part, while development snapshots called wow moments highlighted individual achievements. These offered different ways to hear about nursery life: conversation with staff alongside short accounts of a child's progress. The nursery employed 11 staff at that time; this is a whole-setting staffing figure, rather than a room ratio.
At the February 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that staff worked with families and other professionals to identify and support children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, tracking their development together. That describes a collaborative process, with support shaped around the individual child.
Two areas needed attention in February 2023. Younger children were not consistently helped to understand and manage their feelings, and responses to unwanted behaviour varied. Mealtimes also gave younger children too little practice in serving themselves and developing table manners. These matter because emotional regulation and everyday independence are part of the care experience, not simply additions to play.
The nursery opens Monday to Friday, from 7.30am to 6pm, across the year, closing on bank holidays and for one week at Christmas. Full-day, morning and afternoon sessions are offered. The opening window describes the operating day; the attendance choices allow families to consider either a whole day or one part of it.

In February 2023, the nursery received early-education funding for children aged two, three and four. That is a dated funding position, rather than a guarantee of an individual child's entitlement.
Private full-day, morning and afternoon bookings have separate materials and consumables charges, with the charge structure differing by attendance pattern. Families should obtain the nursery's current written quotation so they can assess the childcare price and these additions together.
Nuffy Bear Day Nursery Tunbridge Wells suits families considering full-day care or morning and afternoon sessions within a two-room setting. Its February 2023 strengths lay in imaginative play, outdoor movement and purposeful experiences such as swimming and pen-pal letters. The same assessment raised practical questions about younger children's emotional support and independence at meals. Those are useful priorities for a visit, especially for families choosing the shared toddler and preschool room.
Ofsted rated it Good overall on 17 February 2023 and found safeguarding effective. Improvement points concerned consistent emotional and behavioural support and younger children's independence during meals.
