Fluppet's Montessori Nursery

At a Glance

Daylight, a cricket green outside the window and Montessori materials give Fluppet's Montessori Nursery its character. Based at The Bill Reeve Pavilion in Aythorpe Roding, it combines a light-filled teaching space with direct access to recreation areas. The physical setting gives children opportunities for both indoor exploration and outdoor activity.

There are 16 places in total. At its 29 June 2022 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good overall and found safeguarding effective; children attending then were aged two to four. That is a dated assessment, rather than a description of today's children or staffing.

The strongest thread in that assessment was children's participation in everyday tasks. In June 2022, children helped prepare snacks, set out lunch and deal with spills. Independence had practical expression: children were doing useful things for themselves, rather than simply choosing which toy to use.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

Montessori means learning through choosing, handling materials and trying things independently, with adult guidance. Materials designed to help children recognise and correct mistakes give them something to work through themselves. This approach sits alongside the early years foundation stage, the statutory framework covering children's learning, development and care. Within this framework, children develop language, early number skills and the ability to manage everyday responsibilities. At the June 2022 visit, this included learning new vocabulary, counting plates and agreeing who would prepare fruit.

The teaching space includes a Montessori Sensorial Activity Shelf, a collection of resources for sensory exploration, alongside literacy and numeracy activities. A construction workbench and small-world train set add opportunities to build and invent. These concrete resources give the approach more substance than a philosophy alone: children have materials to select and manipulate.

Cooking and growing also feature, with pancake making, planting and pizza preparation among the activities. They bring learning into practical tasks with a recognisable purpose. The setting also includes a play house, while the cricket green forms part of the setting's immediate surroundings.

In June 2022, mathematical ideas were woven into ordinary routines. Children worked out how many plates were needed, considered how to divide fruit and measured water for making dough. Number work therefore had an immediate use, rather than being confined to a separate activity.

The garden at that time included an outdoor kitchen and resources children could use in different ways. Children invented dishes and discussed their creations together. Conversations at that visit introduced unfamiliar vocabulary and ideas about direction. These examples show the breadth of the nursery day at that visit, while keeping those observations separate from the current physical setting.

Care and Support

In June 2022, adults gave children time to attempt tasks before offering suggestions. Children used knives for fruit preparation and tongs for serving food, while meals involved china plates, glasses and ordinary cutlery. The emphasis was on practising real skills with support. Everyday care and learning overlapped.

Social situations were handled through discussion. During that visit, children negotiated who would prepare different pieces of fruit and worked towards an agreed solution. They also helped clear away materials and clean spills. These were small responsibilities, but they gave children a role in looking after their shared space.

At the June 2022 inspection, Ofsted identified two improvements: adults needed to extend learning more consistently through their interactions, and information-sharing needed to reach every parent effectively. Both matter to families: the first concerns what an adult adds to a child's activity, and the second concerns how clearly parents understand their child's experience.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The address is The Bill Reeve Pavilion, Round Bush Green, Aythorpe Roding, Dunmow, CM6 1PT. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, and the nursery operates for 47 weeks of the year. Those are opening hours; they should not be treated as a particular booked session.

Enquiries can be made through the contact form. In June 2022, the nursery provided funded early education for two-, three- and four-year-olds; this is an inspection-era funding position.

Getting There

A large car park serves the pavilion, which is set back from the B184. Direct access to recreational areas places outdoor activity alongside the teaching space.

Things to Consider

  • Attendance and funding. The opening window runs from 8am to 6pm across weekdays, with 47 operating weeks. Which booking patterns and funded-hour arrangements, including charges for food and consumables, would apply to your child?
  • Adult interaction. The June 2022 improvement point concerned extending learning consistently. During a visit, look at how practitioners respond when a child has mastered a task or introduces a new idea.
  • Parent communication. In June 2022, information-sharing did not keep every parent fully informed. A useful visit discussion is how learning updates and changes to nursery arrangements reach each family.

The Verdict

Fluppet's suits families drawn to Montessori learning through practical activity, with a light-filled pavilion setting and outdoor recreation close at hand. Its capacity of 16 places gives a clear sense of the nursery's overall scale, although that is not a daily group size. The June 2022 examples of children preparing food, solving everyday number problems and negotiating responsibilities give the approach substance. The interaction and communication improvement points deserve equal attention when weighing that dated assessment.
