Bright Horizons Little Stars Nursery and Preschool

At a Glance

A laboratory-site setting with a Sleep Room, Reading Library and Landscaped Garden gives Little Stars a recognisable character. Bright Horizons Little Stars Nursery and Preschool operates at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Chilton, Didcot, OX11 0QX, accepting children from 3 to 60 months. Its location will be especially relevant to families whose working day centres on the site.

At its January 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good, found safeguarding effective and identified a need to develop younger children's literacy, mathematics and problem-solving opportunities. That judgement needs to be read alongside later regulatory action: repeated risk-assessment issues at this nursery and an organisational safeguarding notice affecting Bright Horizons warrant careful attention.

Weekday opening runs from 7.30am to 6pm. The practical offer combines care across the year, stretched funded hours and paid additional childcare, with a chef preparing food on site.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care: in everyday terms, play, conversation, physical activity and relationships support learning. It is the common foundation, rather than an extra programme unique to Little Stars.

Ready for School adds an explicit emphasis on developing knowledge and confidence for the next stage. Forest School, an approach involving learning outdoors, also forms part of the offer. These give parents two useful strands to weigh: preparation for school and opportunities beyond indoor activities.

In January 2023, preschool activities followed children's interest in frogs, bringing together a song, water play about their habitat and drawings of their life cycle. This connected language, exploration and making things around a subject that had caught children's attention. Younger children explored mud and ice, with staff introducing words during their play.

The weakness was also specific. In January 2023, staff sometimes missed opportunities to extend younger children's problem solving, early mathematics and literacy. For parents of babies and toddlers, the relevant issue is how staff build those opportunities into ordinary play, rather than whether an activity looks busy or entertaining.

Outdoor and Community Life

A Landscaped Garden and Soft Play Room give the setting different spaces for movement; Sensory Play adds another way for children to explore. The Sleep Room provides a separate named space for rest. These physical features matter when choosing care for children with different activity and rest needs.

In January 2023, children exercised regularly in a large outdoor area, while younger children used indoor climbing equipment and slides. Books also crossed the boundary between nursery and home: children borrowed from a lending library, and parents received guidance on supporting reading. The current Reading Library keeps books visible within the offer.

Care and Support

In January 2023, preschool children explored emotions through a book about differently coloured monsters and painted paper-plate faces to express their feelings. This gave them a concrete way to talk about feelings. Daily routines also included serving their own lunch and managing small personal-care tasks, making independence part of ordinary nursery life.

Home languages were another practical connection with families. In January 2023, staff gathered familiar words from parents to use with children who spoke another language at home. For a child beginning nursery while learning English, familiar vocabulary can provide a bridge between home and the setting.

The later safety history changes the weight parents should give the older safeguarding judgement. In September 2024, risk assessments were strengthened after a premises and equipment safety breach; further incidents led to a regulatory call on 28 May 2026, which found requirements were not being met because adequate risk assessments had not been established and embedded in daily practice. The June 2026 outcome described changes to the environment, staff training and the removal of particular resources, alongside acceptance that the provider understood its risk-assessment responsibilities. The recurrence matters even though corrective action was recorded.

On 22 June 2026, Ofsted reported serving Bright Horizons with a Welfare Requirements Notice addressing organisational safeguarding leadership, oversight and practice, with actions due by 1 August 2026. The notice concerned organisational arrangements and did not establish concerns at every individual nursery; its published position was that the provider had yet to demonstrate consistently effective safeguarding across its provision. That organisational issue remains relevant to a decision about Little Stars.

Fresh meals are prepared by the nursery's own chef on site. For families, this brings food preparation into the setting's daily operation rather than leaving meals entirely to arrangements at home.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Little Stars opens Monday to Friday, from 7.30am to 6pm, throughout the year apart from bank and public holidays and one inset day. That closure pattern matters for families arranging care around work rather than school terms.

Funded childcare uses 10-hour sessions beginning when the nursery opens. Additional attendance outside that funded session is charged separately, and purchasing additional hours is not a condition of taking a funded place. Opening hours and funded-session arrangements therefore need to be considered separately when matching care to a working day.

Getting There

The address is Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Chilton, Didcot, OX11 0QX. Onsite Parking and a Buggy Park are part of the offer, giving families practical options for bringing children and storing a pushchair.

Funding and Paid Extras

The funding arrangements cover the listed 15 Hrs and 30 Hrs entitlements, subject to eligibility, stretched over 50 weeks. Additional private hours are charged separately. A funded entitlement therefore contributes childcare hours, rather than covering every element of attendance.

For private childcare, meals and snacks, nappies and wipes are included in the fee, with formula for babies under 1 year also included. For funded hours, food is charged separately and that charge is non-mandatory; consumables associated with those hours are supplied. The terms distinguish supply from an explicit statement that consumables are included in the fee.

A registration charge applies, and payment is collected monthly in advance by direct debit. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation; chosen attendance, funded hours, additional hours and food charges are the relevant components for budgeting.

Things to Consider

  • Repeated risk-assessment issues. Changes followed the September 2024 and June 2026 outcomes. During a visit, ask how staff now review resources and environmental risks, and how those checks are maintained in daily practice.
  • Organisational safeguarding action. The 22 June 2026 notice required actions by 1 August 2026. Ask for the latest formal outcome and an explanation of how the resulting organisational changes apply at Little Stars.
  • Learning for younger children. January 2023 brought a specific improvement point about literacy, mathematics and problem solving. Ask staff to show how these now arise in babies' and toddlers' play.
  • Funded attendance and food. Funding is stretched over 50 weeks and uses 10-hour sessions from opening time, with a non-mandatory food charge. Personal tours are bookable. Families affected by allergies should confirm current arrangements.

The Verdict

Little Stars suits families seeking weekday care across the year at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, including those combining stretched funding with additional paid hours. Ready for School, Forest School and the separate spaces for reading, rest and physical play give the offer useful substance.

The decision also requires scrutiny of later safety action. The January 2023 inspection provides a dated assessment of education and care; repeated local risk-assessment issues and the June 2026 organisational safeguarding notice make current implementation and formal outcomes central to choosing this nursery.
