Ossett Childcare & Pre-School

At a Glance

A three-storey building, a garden and three animal-named rooms give Ossett Childcare & Pre-School a recognisable shape. Based at Bliss House on Dewsbury Road, it has capacity for 75 children aged 3 months to 5 years. Its room structure takes children from Bouncing Bears through Marvellous Monkeys to Terrific Tigers, with a change of room as they grow.

At its January 2025 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good and safeguarding effective, while requiring sharper individual speech and language work and better sharing of developmental information between rooms. Later regulatory visits in August 2025 and April 2026 identified failures against requirements, with corrective action taken; these events remain relevant to a family's decision because supervision and safety concerns recur in the later history.

The practical offer includes weekday opening throughout the year, funded childcare and meals supplied through Apetito. For parents, the strongest combination is a clear age-based room structure and communication through Famly, balanced against specific questions about supervision and room transitions.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Bouncing Bears covers 5 months to 2 years, Marvellous Monkeys takes children aged 2 to 3, and Terrific Tigers serves ages 3 to 5. These age bands give parents a clear picture of where their child fits within the nursery day. The building has three storeys and a garden, adding outdoor space to the indoor setting.

Staffing arrangements need to be considered alongside the later supervision concerns. A staffing ratio is not a promise about the number of children in the room.

Learning and Activities

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guides learning through play and exploration, covering communication, physical development, relationships and the foundations of literacy and mathematics. Here, planning follows children's interests and individual needs.

In January 2025, babies explored paint with adult help, toddlers joined daily exercise activities, and preschool children used creative and mark-making experiences to practise hand control. Books also featured across the ages: younger children listened to stories and practised handling books, while older children discussed what was happening in them. A lending library extended book-sharing into family life.

Numbers were woven into everyday experiences in January 2025, including recognising numerals, counting and understanding time through routines. These are concrete examples of learning through the nursery day. The improvement point was equally specific: activities did not consistently target some children's individual language needs closely enough.

Community outings are part of the offer. They give children experiences beyond the building, while the garden provides an outdoor setting within the nursery itself.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

Famly supports contact between parents and staff, alongside nursery administration. In January 2025, parents also received electronic progress information and met staff face to face to discuss next steps and ways to support learning at home. That combination gave families more than a record of attendance: it linked nursery learning with what happened outside it.

Room changes involved the child's key person accompanying them on a visit in January 2025. Interests and care needs were passed to the receiving key person, helping new staff understand the child. Developmental information was less precise, however, which could interrupt the continuity of learning. The distinction matters: feeling familiar with a new room and maintaining the right learning challenge are separate parts of a successful transition.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

Toilet training follows the child's home routine as closely as possible, with updates for parents and sticker or reward charts. In January 2025, children also practised toothbrushing each day, with mouth models used to demonstrate technique. This made self-care something children could practise rather than only hear about.

Apetito supplies nursery meals, with dishes intended to accommodate children's dietary needs. Parents provide nappies, wipes and nappy cream, as well as bottles and suitable clothing for the day.

Visits on 14 August 2025 and 1 April 2026 identified unmet requirements, with corrective action already taken. The August response included additional staff training and closer monitoring of deployment, communication and supervision. The April outcome concerned an incident in which a child left through an open door and reached a neighbouring garden; the child remained visible to staff and was unharmed. Afterwards, the fire exit was reserved for emergencies, signage was added and risk assessments were reviewed.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The address is Bliss House, 251 Dewsbury Road, Ossett, WF5 9QF. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, throughout the year, with closure on bank holidays and Christmas Eve. This gives families a clear operating window around which to plan work and other commitments.

Visits can be booked through the nursery's contact and enquiry route. Wraparound care is not offered, so families needing childcare around a school day need a separate arrangement.

Getting There

There is no nursery car park; parking outside the building is permitted provided neighbours are not disrupted. The nursery is close to motorway access via the M1, making its road location relevant for families whose journeys use that route.

Funding and Paid Extras

The nursery offers Working Parent Funding and Universal Funding, with 3 and 4 year funding also listed. Entitlement depends on the relevant eligibility criteria; the offer does not itself establish that an individual family qualifies.

Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation. Parents supply nappies, wipes and nappy cream, which need to be included in the family's practical preparations alongside clothing, bottles and outdoor wear.

In January 2025, staff gathered information from local schools about the skills children would need and incorporated it into planning. This was preparation for the move to school, rather than an admissions advantage.

Things to Consider

  • Supervision and door safety. The August 2025 and April 2026 regulatory outcomes both followed concerns involving staffing or supervision. At a visit, discuss how staff deployment, door controls and monitoring now work in everyday practice.
  • Learning between rooms. January 2025 improvement points covered individual language development and developmental handovers. Ask how a child's learning targets accompany them from Bouncing Bears to Marvellous Monkeys and onwards.
  • The youngest starting age. The nursery's overall age range starts at 3 months, while Bouncing Bears starts at 5 months. Confirm the starting arrangement if you are seeking care before that room's stated age band.
  • Funding arrangements. Before agreeing attendance, request a written breakdown of the funded-hours pattern, additional hours and any meal or consumable charges. This will help you compare the quotation with your family's intended routine.

The Verdict

Ossett Childcare & Pre-School suits families seeking weekday, year-round nursery care, an age-based room structure and a practical link between home and nursery. In January 2025, children used a lending library and took part in daily self-care activities.

The January 2025 Good judgement needs to be read alongside the later supervision and safety history. Families who value the setting's room progression and parent communication should make those subsequent changes, together with language support and handovers, central to their decision.
