Coten End Pre-School

At a Glance

Messy play has a clear place at Coten End Pre-School: children can join painting activities even if they decline an apron. That small detail captures the emphasis on exploration rather than keeping everything tidy. Based at Warwickspace in Warwick, the pre-school has 50 places in total for children aged two to five. Caterpillars serves younger children; Butterflies serves those approaching school age.

At its 8 June 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the provision Good, judged safeguarding effective and found that the curriculum supported children's learning through carefully ordered activities. The practical appeal today lies in play-led learning, a gradual move between rooms and care that accommodates children still learning to use the toilet. Attendance is term-time only.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Caterpillars accommodates up to 15 children aged two to three in a bright room, combining painting, messy activities, stories and singing with movement between indoor and outdoor play. The room does not follow a fixed timetable. For a child beginning group care, that gives the day room to respond to interests and needs rather than requiring everyone to move through an identical sequence.

Butterflies serves children from three to rising five, combining freely chosen play with structured activities, outdoor experiences and time in smaller groups. Children can start directly in this room or move from Caterpillars. Transitions usually happen around three, but familiar staff guide the move and allow extra settling time where needed. Readiness matters alongside age.

Learning and Activities

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for learning and care: play, communication, physical activity and growing independence form part of the child's day. Coten End's planning builds on children's interests and individual development. Painting and stories therefore sit alongside opportunities to make choices, share resources and practise communicating with other children.

In June 2022, children chose books for themselves, used simplified signs alongside speech and explored colour mixing with paint they could access independently. These are concrete examples of children taking an active part in their learning. Adults also used songs and stories throughout the day, giving language a place beyond a single organised activity.

Outdoor and Community Life

In June 2022, the outdoor area included climbing equipment and a slope used for skateboard play. Children practised balancing and made decisions about manageable risks, while staff sometimes joined their games. Outdoor activity had a purpose beyond a break from the room: it created opportunities to test movement and solve practical problems.

Warwick Castle featured in the summer programme for 2026, with a trip scheduled for 22 May. This is a past calendar example, rather than a promise of a recurring outing. It gives parents a concrete sense of the places included in the pre-school's activities beyond its premises.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

Key persons provide the main relationship between a child, their family and the setting. Shared learning journals help parents follow development, while the Famly app provides a route to contact the SENDCo and receive information about behaviour incidents. That makes communication useful for both ordinary updates and matters needing a more focused conversation.

Toilet training is not an entry requirement for either room. Caterpillars has potties and a changing table, and staff work with families as children develop these skills. Parents supply nappies and wipes. This removes pressure to complete toilet training before starting, while keeping responsibility for the supplies clear.

Sleep arrangements begin with a discussion of the child's routines and preferences. Children use rest mats with individual bedding, settle with a familiar adult and remain within staff's sight and hearing; the procedure requires recorded checks prompted by a ten-minute timer. Children are not compelled to sleep. For families whose child still needs daytime rest, this is a relevant part of the care offer.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

SEND support follows an assess, plan, do and review cycle, with parents involved in decisions and external agencies brought in where appropriate. Individual education or action plans specify interventions, resources and who will deliver them, with a review date agreed every six weeks. Where medical interventions are needed, a healthcare plan is integrated into the wider support arrangements.

The STUART approach to behaviour gives children space to calm down before discussing feelings, understanding the difficulty and considering what to do next. The behaviour policy also provides for a calm space and joint planning with parents when difficulties persist. These are stated procedures, rather than a guarantee of how any individual incident will unfold.

In June 2022, staff needed to adapt behaviour support more closely to children's understanding and to apply training more effectively across their different responsibilities. Those findings deserve attention alongside the positive judgement.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The address is Warwickspace, 71 Coten End, Warwick, CV34 4NU. Attendance runs during term time, with school-holiday closures. Full-time and part-time attendance feature in the admissions arrangements; a full-time application may receive preference depending on work commitments, occupancy and room availability.

Applications can be submitted through a registration form, and enquiries can be made by telephone on 01926 491873 or through the contact form. Before a child starts, parents complete a contract and registration paperwork covering matters such as dietary needs, collection arrangements and emergency contacts.

Funding and Paid Extras

Government-funded early education is offered to eligible children. Funded admissions have a termly intake beginning the term following the child reaching the age of eligibility, and bookings can be made a term ahead; specific funded sessions may be restricted according to the pre-school's operating requirements. Families should obtain a current written quotation for paid attendance and charges.

Lunch can be a packed meal supplied by parents or a separately purchased hot meal cooked on site. The packed-lunch policy excludes nuts and nut-containing foods and recommends an insulated bag with freezer blocks because lunches cannot be refrigerated. Nappies and baby wipes are supplied by parents.

Things to Consider

  • Opening hours conflict. The home and about pages give 8am to 3.45pm, while the contact page gives Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 6.30pm. Establish the actual care window before planning work or collection around it.
  • Behaviour support and staff responsibilities. The June 2022 improvement points concerned responses tailored to individual children and putting training into practice across staff roles. During a tour, ask how these changes are demonstrated in everyday care.
  • Term-time attendance and allocation. School-holiday closures require a separate family plan, and full-time applications may receive preference under specified conditions. Ask how the admissions and waiting-list arrangements apply to your intended attendance pattern.
  • Lunch and allergies. Families can choose a packed lunch or purchase a hot meal, and the packed-lunch policy excludes nuts. Allergy-affected families should confirm current food-handling arrangements and discuss their child's requirements before joining.

The Verdict

Coten End suits families seeking term-time preschool care through either full-time or part-time attendance, with play-led learning and room transitions that allow for individual readiness. Caterpillars' cap of 15 is a useful practical detail for parents choosing a first group setting; toilet-training support and planned rest also give the care offer substance.

The Good judgement from June 2022 is balanced by specific improvement points about behaviour support and staff training. The strongest reasons to consider this pre-school are concrete: accessible creative activities, familiar adults supporting room moves, and structured planning for additional needs. Clarifying the care hours and discussing those improvement points would make a tour more useful.
