During ice and water play, staff introduced words such as splash and melt. The nursery works within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the statutory framework that organises children's learning across communication, physical, personal, social, mathematical, literacy, expressive and world-understanding development. In parent terms, it means play and routines should build skills across connected areas, with practitioners deciding the activities and next steps for each child. The activities seen in June 2023 linked several of those areas and gave children varied ways to practise. Chalk and dot-joining exercised fine-motor control; counting play introduced early mathematics; and questions about insects and pretend ice-cream flavours gave children reasons to describe, compare and remember.

Music and movement brought another lively strand. Songs, stories and sustained conversation supported communication, while new words were introduced in context rather than as an isolated exercise. Children shaped their bodies into a tiny mouse and pretended to jump like a frog. The youngest children sometimes disengaged when group sessions continued beyond their attention span. Tidy-up, snack and group-time routines sometimes interrupted play before children had developed an idea fully, while useful extra resources were not always accessible. For a family, the practical question is whether the present routine now bends more readily around concentrated play.

By June 2023, familiar adults and peer relationships gave the care picture its strength. Staff understood children's development and engaged closely with their play, while families received daily updates and online observations. That continuity matters for young children. Mealtimes doubled as self-care practice: children used utensils to cut fruit and brioche bread, making an everyday routine part of growing independence.

Safeguarding was effective at that inspection. Staff could recognise a range of safeguarding concerns and knew how to escalate them. Regular training, controlled premises and risk checks supported that practice. Targeted funding also extended support beyond the nursery, giving children tailored resources and families practical materials to use at home.
