Precious Playdays

A 25-place pre-school at the Multi Racial Community Centre, Precious Playdays pairs a small setting with an exceptional recent inspection record. Ofsted judged it Outstanding in March 2024 across education, behaviour, personal development and leadership, and found safeguarding effective.

The sharpest feature is how children are trusted to direct play while staff decide when to model, extend or step back. The setting provides weekday all-day childcare during school terms, categorised as five days or more per week.

Precious Playdays works within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In parent terms, that means play and adult-guided experiences develop communication, physical development, personal and social skills alongside early literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts.

Practice observed in March 2024 gave that framework real substance. Staff built teaching from each child's starting points, introduced useful vocabulary during play and gave children repeated opportunities to practise. Children then recalled new words independently, explained what they had made and confidently led their own learning. Gentle challenge mattered too: practitioners encouraged children to concentrate, reflect and improve rather than taking over.

Forthcoming topics were introduced early. Staff could discover what children already knew, build anticipation and connect later experiences to their interests. That is purposeful sequencing, rather than a string of unrelated activities.

Relationships were a defining strength in March 2024. Staff used physical interaction to establish security, especially with children who could not yet speak, and strong bonds formed quickly. Children were also given time to regulate their emotions before adults discussed minor conflicts with them. The implication is practical: feelings were acknowledged, but children still learned how to resolve difficulty.

Staff knew children exceptionally well and adapted inclusive learning around individual needs. The multicultural team worked compassionately with families and brought the wider community into children's understanding. Experienced managers modelled teaching, mentored staff and supported staff wellbeing. Safeguarding arrangements were effective at the inspection.

Precious Playdays is based at the Multi Racial Community Centre, 70 Durban Road West, Watford, WD18 7DS. It has 25 places in total. The Hertfordshire directory categorises provision for children aged 0 to 5 and 5 to 8.

Sessions and Attendance

The published pattern is Weekday All Day, for five days or more per week during school terms. This wording does not establish a minimum attendance rule, so families should use the visit to establish which combinations can actually be booked.

Funding and Paid Extras

The setting participates in funded early education for eligible children aged 9 to 23 months, supported and working-family two-year-olds, and universal and working-family entitlements for three- and four-year-olds. Tax Free Childcare is also accepted, with provision delivered in school terms.

Meals and snacks are charged separately through a daily charge category. Non-food consumables are also charged separately through a daily consumable category. Additional voluntary services and private paid hours have separate charge categories; families need a current nursery-specific written quotation.

Precious Playdays' strongest case is educational and relational: an Outstanding March 2024 inspection described children leading their learning, language flourishing and staff combining security with well-judged challenge. Its small total capacity and community-centre base give parents a clearly defined setting to assess.

It is best suited to families seeking weekday all-day care across five or more days and those whose childcare follows the school-term calendar. Families wanting part-week attendance or care outside term time need a different published pattern, or a clear answer from the nursery before committing.
