Reepham Pre school

At a Glance

Play, self-care and outdoor exploration give Reepham Pre school its character. Based at Methodist Church School Room on High Street in Reepham, it has 18 places in total. Each child joins the Butterfly, Caterpillar or Spider key-person group, with everyday independence an explicit part of the curriculum.

Ofsted rated the setting Good on 20 July 2023. The children attending then were aged two to four. That judgement provides a useful starting point, while the practical examples beneath it show what mattered in the children's day: conversation, taking turns, investigating nature and learning to do things for themselves.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the standards for children's learning, development and care; here, play and exploration sit alongside learning social skills and managing everyday tasks. Interest-led learning is part of the approach. The curriculum also includes kindness, recognising differences and strategies for handling emotions, making relationships part of what children learn rather than simply a backdrop to activities.

In July 2023, children worked together with foam bricks on an ambitious building project, while adults developed conversation through questions and commentary. Another exchange began when children spotted a bee and discussed nectar and honey with staff. These examples connect language with something children are already doing or noticing, giving conversation a purpose beyond answering an adult's question.

There was a limitation to that approach in July 2023: activities sometimes received more attention than the precise knowledge or skills a child needed next, and staff did not share a sufficiently clear understanding of the curriculum's intentions. Enjoyable play and precise learning goals need to work together. This is a useful distinction for parents considering how their child's interests will lead to further learning.

Outdoor and Community Life

Outdoor exploration continues across different weather conditions. The approach links physical play with opportunities to recognise and manage risks, so the outdoors serves both movement and judgement.

In July 2023, children practised coordination by aiming coloured beanbags at a hoop. They also tried to replant a broken branch and brought water for it. These are small, concrete examples of physical activity and curiosity about living things, rather than a separate programme added to the nursery day.

Care and Support

Butterfly, Caterpillar and Spider are the key-person groups. Each child is allocated a key person, who becomes the family's main contact for questions or worries, while the wider staff team also supports the child. These are relationship groups; they should not be read as room capacities or age bands.

The manager also holds the SENCO lead role. The team structure includes a safeguarding lead and a deputy safeguarding lead, as well as an apprentice early years educator. For families, this gives identifiable responsibilities for discussing additional needs and raising concerns.

At its July 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and described close relationships with children, productive communication with parents and the use of additional funding for resources to support children needing extra help. These are dated findings, rather than a promise about the support any individual child will receive.

In July 2023, practical independence included serving snacks and pouring drinks, with physical guidance where a child needed encouragement. Sand timers helped children understand whose turn came next. A timed handwashing routine also made hygiene tangible: children could follow a clear task with an obvious endpoint.

Support for children learning English alongside another language needed further attention in July 2023. Staff did not consistently bring children's home languages into play and learning. That concern matters alongside the positive examples of conversation, especially for families whose child uses another language at home.

Practical Information

The address is Methodist Church School Room, High Street, Reepham, Lincoln, LN3 4DP. Families can contact the setting through its enquiry form or by email. Visits can be booked by email.

In July 2023, the setting operated on weekdays during term time, with session times of 8am to 3.30pm. At that point it provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. These arrangements describe that period and should inform, rather than settle, a present-day attendance decision.

School preparation included a link with the adjacent school in July 2023: its Reception teacher trained staff in phonics. This supported work on letters and sounds before children moved on.

Things to Consider

  • Learning goals. Planning needed greater precision in July 2023. During a visit, ask how staff now decide what an individual child should learn next and use play to develop it.
  • Home languages. Support for children learning English alongside another language was an improvement priority in July 2023. Ask how your child's home language would be included in activities and conversation.
  • Attendance and costs. The July 2023 pattern was term-time weekday provision. Ask for the current attendance options and a written quotation explaining funded hours, private hours, meals and consumables.

The Verdict

Reepham Pre school suits families interested in play-led learning, outdoor exploration and a clear key-person relationship. Its curriculum gives everyday independence a place alongside language and social development.

The July 2023 picture was positive overall, but the weaknesses in learning intentions and home-language support deserve attention. Families considering term-time provision have a useful starting point here; the strongest decision will connect their child's needs with how those two areas work now.
