A home learning library and visits to a café and fire station give Speckled Hen Day Nursery a recognisable character: everyday experiences extend beyond its rooms. These were features of its July 2025 provision, rather than promises about today's timetable.
At its 7 July 2025 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective. The nursery now has capacity for 25 children, with an accepted age range from birth to five years.
The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care, bringing these together through play and everyday experiences. In July 2025, staff built activities around children's interests, selecting stories and resources to help them explore their ideas.
Mark-making took different forms: younger children used wet sand, while older children drew people with faces. Daily singing included a hello song and weather songs; stories, questions and new words added opportunities to practise communication. Puppets and musical instruments also supported early speech.
Outdoor access was daily in July 2025. Community experiences included buying a drink at a café and meeting firefighters at the fire station, giving children practical encounters with people and places beyond the nursery.
In July 2025, staff exchanged information with parents about individual care needs and offered comfort when children became upset. Shared routines included collecting and putting away carpet mats, giving children a manageable part in looking after their surroundings.
At the July 2025 inspection, Ofsted found that assessment and collaboration with other professionals helped staff identify additional needs and put support strategies in place for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities.
Regular parent updates, invitations to join outings and a home learning library connected nursery experiences with family life in July 2025. Staff from local schools also visited to support children preparing to move on. Children ate freshly prepared meals at that time.
School Lodge, Station Road, Sedbergh, LA10 5DL is the nursery's address. It is open throughout the year, Monday to Friday, from 8am to 6pm.
In July 2025, the nursery operated independently within Sedbergh School's grounds and provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. Sharing the school grounds does not guarantee a Reception place.
