Walney Central Pre-School

At a Glance

In February 2023, a mud kitchen, familiar stories and children learning to manage their own coats gave Walney Central Pre-School a practical, hands-on character. At its February 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged the provision Good and found safeguarding effective. The strongest examples connect play with skills children can use for themselves.

Based at The Old Police House on Walney Island, the setting has 45 places in total. In February 2023, children attending were aged 0 to 4; babies and older children took part in activities suited to their development.

The Nursery Experience

In February 2023, learning combined language, movement and everyday independence. The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care: here, its practical expression included songs, stories, physical play and learning to do things independently.

Babies joined actions and practised words during Incy wincy spider. Older children remembered phrases from Room on the Broom, giving storytelling a participatory role rather than making children simply listeners. These examples show how familiar material encouraged children to contribute.

Physical activities in February 2023 included threading pipe cleaners through a colander and constructing obstacle courses for climbing, jumping and hopping. Babies practised crawling and walking. The mud kitchen also gave older children something to make and talk about, linking hands-on play with conversation.

Care and Support

At the February 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that staff worked with parents and external agencies, with an on-site special educational needs coordinator helping children with SEND participate throughout the setting and make very good progress.

In February 2023, additional small-group activities addressed emotional development following the pandemic lockdowns. Practical demonstrations supported independence too: children learnt a method for putting on coats and how to handle a knife to cut food. These were useful steps towards managing everyday tasks.

Family communication in February 2023 included progress reports and guidance for learning at home; some parents had also received training about children's sleep routines. Children ate freshly prepared, nutritious meals, with systems addressing allergies and dietary needs.

The February 2023 findings also identified uneven teaching of personal safety and hygiene. Opportunities to explain safe scissor handling and safe sitting were sometimes missed, while younger children needed more consistent encouragement to manage tasks such as wiping their noses.

Practical Information

The address is The Old Police House, Central Drive, Walney Island, Barrow-in-Furness, LA14 3HY.

In February 2023, the pre-school operated Monday to Friday throughout the year, with sessions running from 8am to 4.30pm. It then provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. These are dated attendance and funding arrangements, rather than a basis for planning today's booking.

Things to Consider

  • Everyday safety. The February 2023 findings called for more consistent teaching about managing risks, including scissors and sitting safely. Discuss how these habits are now reinforced during play.
  • Personal care. Hygiene teaching was another February 2023 improvement point. Look for how children are helped to recognise and manage their own care needs, rather than having each task done for them.
  • Planning attendance. The February 2023 arrangements combined year-round weekday operation with an 8am to 4.30pm session window. What attendance pattern and funded-hours arrangement would fit your child now?

The Verdict

Walney Central Pre-School merits consideration for families who value practical independence, participatory storytelling and physical play. Its February 2023 examples give those priorities substance. The same findings make consistent safety and self-care teaching the key points to explore before choosing it.
