Higher Folds Two Year Olds Nursery and Pre-School

At a Glance

Community-centre childcare gives Higher Folds Two Year Olds Nursery and Pre-School its character. Based at Higher Folds Community Centre in Leigh, it combines nursery provision with an organisation that supports families in the surrounding community. Its accepted age range is 24 to 57 months.

At its June 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall and found safeguarding effective. The detail matters more than the label: children chose their activities, practised physical skills indoors and outdoors, and received comfort when upset. Those are observations from June 2023, rather than a description of today's routines.

Half-day and full-day bookings provide two attendance options. The nursery operates during term time, making the school-holiday calendar an important practical consideration.

The Nursery Experience

The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care. In parent language, that brings learning and everyday care together: conversation, movement, play and growing independence all belong in the nursery day.

In June 2023, children selected activities for themselves and explored both indoor and outdoor spaces. Balance bicycles and obstacles gave them opportunities to practise steering and coordination. Staff demonstrated painting movements, while daily dough play involved squeezing and shaping. These examples show how larger movements and hand control could develop alongside each other, rather than treating preparation for writing as a task confined to pencils.

Movement extended beyond free play. In June 2023, children took part in yoga and football classes and had swimming lessons each week. These offered different ways to use their bodies, from exploring movement to practising physical skills through organised activities. The frequency applies to the swimming lessons; it does not establish a timetable for the other classes.

Group learning was less consistent. In June 2023, some children were not drawn into shared activities as fully as they could have been. The improvement requested was to adapt these activities more effectively, especially for quieter children. For a child who prefers to watch before joining in, that is a meaningful point to explore.

Care and Support

Before children started in June 2023, staff visited families at home and used those conversations to help children settle. This gave staff information about the child before nursery attendance began, making the family's knowledge part of the settling process.

During that month, adults helped upset children talk about their feelings and offered reassurance. Children practised sharing and waiting for their turn. These small interactions matter: learning to express distress and cope with another child's turn is part of becoming comfortable in a group.

At the June 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities highly effective, highlighting communication screening, progress reviews at least once a term and work with external agencies. The nursery currently has designated SENCO, safeguarding and wellbeing roles, giving these responsibilities an identified place within the team.

In June 2023, staff also worked with a local school to support children's next stage of learning. However, changes between activities could unsettle children, with lunchtime singled out for improvement. The issue was clarity: children did not consistently understand what they were expected to do next.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Half-day bookings last three hours; full-day bookings last six hours. These are attendance durations, rather than clock times for the start and finish of each booking.

Opening hours are 9am to 3.30pm, Monday to Friday, during term time. The nursery closes for school holidays. Families comparing the two booking patterns should therefore weigh both the length of the child's day and the separate need for holiday childcare.

Funding and Paid Extras

In June 2023, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. That is a dated participation statement, rather than confirmation of a particular funded arrangement today. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.

Things to Consider

  • Quieter children. Adapting group activities was an improvement point in June 2023. During a visit, ask how staff help a child who watches initially or needs individual encouragement to participate.
  • Lunchtime changes. The June 2023 findings identified unsettled transitions, especially around lunch. Ask how the current routine helps children understand what happens next.
  • Term-time attendance. Three-hour and six-hour bookings sit within a term-time calendar. This suits families whose childcare needs follow that pattern, while school holidays require separate planning.
  • The funded-day quotation. Ask for one written breakdown covering funded hours, additional paid attendance, food and non-food consumables, so the proposed booking can be assessed as a whole.

The Verdict

Higher Folds suits families seeking either a three-hour half day or a six-hour full day during term time, with childcare based in their community centre. Its June 2023 account of nursery life contains useful substance: home visits before starting, physical activities and practical support for children's communication.

The balance is clear. There is a Good inspection judgement, alongside specific questions about participation in group activities and the handling of lunchtime transitions. Those are the points that should shape a visit, especially for a quieter child or one who finds changes difficult.
