Nature Days, swimming lessons and trips by nursery minibus give Little Acorns an outward-looking character. Its large outdoor play area supports activities close to home, while outings extend children's experiences into the surrounding area. For families who value time outdoors, these are concrete parts of the offer.
Partou Little Acorns Day Nursery & Pre-school caters for children from birth to five in Atherton. At its 11 July 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall. The practical range includes full days, morning and afternoon sessions, plus term-time attendance.
The strongest reasons to consider it are the outdoor programme and activities shaped around children's interests. The important qualification concerns everyday changes of activity: in July 2023, some children were unsure what to do after lunch because staff had not prepared that change effectively.
The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care. Here, that means learning through activities and play, with attention to what individual children need next. Alongside it, the group-wide Partou child led curriculum shapes activities around children's interests rather than giving every child the same starting point.
Curiosity Approach is also named as an influence on interest-led learning. The useful detail is the emphasis on what engages each child; the name alone should not be read as a promise about particular equipment or outcomes. Nature Days has a more tangible setting: its learning activities use the large outdoor play area, giving outdoor exploration a place in the nursery day.
In July 2023, babies explored sensory board books alongside their key person, while older children revisited familiar stories and their plots. Books, songs and rhymes were used together. This gave different ages different ways into language, from shared attention with an adult to following a longer story.
Mathematical activities in July 2023 included counting objects in multiples and connecting the final number counted with the quantity in the group. Practical independence appeared in smaller tasks too: children put on waterproof clothing and helped one another with difficult zips. These examples show learning woven into both planned activities and everyday tasks.
The nursery minibus makes trips around the local area part of the offer, alongside swimming lessons and forest school outings. The latter involve outdoor learning in a natural setting; they sit alongside Nature Days activities at the nursery rather than replacing them.
For a child who enjoys movement and exploring beyond familiar surroundings, this combination has clear appeal. The outdoor play area provides space for play on site, and trips introduce different settings. In July 2023, swimming lessons and regular nature outings were already part of children's experiences.
At the July 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) included in nursery life, with additional communication help such as sign language. Those are dated findings, rather than a blanket assurance about every child's future experience.
In July 2023, staff used their knowledge of children's interests and development to recognise when extra help was needed. Babies shared books with their key person, and children settled into familiar routines. For parents, these examples give substance to the relationship between an individual child and the adults caring for them.
Regular updates about children and their progress are included within the care charge. That creates a connection between nursery activities and home: parents receive information about development, alongside the activities their child experiences during the day.
Meals are cooked at the nursery using a seasonal menu. Food and drinks sit within a separate meals and snacks charge, so their provision should be considered alongside the care cost rather than assumed to be included in it.
The July 2023 concern was specific: the change from lunch to play left some children uncertain and moving around without clear direction. Preparation for changes within the daily routine was the improvement requested. This matters because care includes helping children understand what happens next, as well as the quality of the activity itself.
The nursery opens Monday to Friday, from 7.15am to 6.15pm, at 279 Bolton Road, Atherton, Greater Manchester, M46 9HG. Opening hours and booked sessions are separate: a full day runs from 8am to 6pm, a morning from 8am to 1pm, and an afternoon from 1pm to 6pm.
Early drop off covers 7.15am to 8am, while late pick-up covers 6pm to 6.15pm. These additions let families extend a booking around the core sessions. Term-time attendance is another option, alongside year-round care.
Bank holidays are closure days, Christmas Eve finishes at 4pm, and the nursery closes between Christmas and New Year. Charges run across 51 weeks and include bank holidays. That distinction matters when comparing the annual cost with the days a child actually attends.
Funded childcare is offered through Wigan Local Authority. For eligible families, funding covers a maximum of 10 hours a day: the 15 or 30 hours weekly entitlement can be taken across 38 term weeks or stretched across 51 weeks for year-round attendance; the latter provides 11.17 or 22.35 funded hours each week. A stretched allocation spreads support over the year, so it should not be mistaken for the same weekly allowance as term-time funding.
Funding pays for care. Meals and snacks carry a separate charge, as do consumables, including sun cream, nappies and wet wipes; both charges also apply to funded sessions. Private care is charged separately from those categories too. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.
Online enquiries are handled by the Family Care Team, with a target response within three working days. The enquiry form also accepts requests for a visit, including a preferred date and morning or afternoon preference, with the exact time confirmed afterwards.
Little Acorns suits families considering morning sessions, afternoon sessions or full days, with term-time and year-round attendance also catered for. Nature Days, swimming and minibus outings give parents specific reasons to consider it beyond the opening window.
The Good judgement from July 2023 provides a positive inspection position, tempered by the concern about preparation for daily changes. For parents weighing this nursery, the strongest combination is interest-led activity, outdoor experiences and several attendance patterns, with a clear distinction between care funding and additional charges.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall on 11 July 2023. The improvement requested concerned preparing children more effectively for changes within their daily routine.
