Physical play and growing independence give Redwood House Private Day Nursery its character: babies practising with beakers, toddlers experimenting with scoops and older children persisting with a basketball hoop featured in August 2024. These are small, practical steps towards doing things for themselves.
The nursery has capacity for 123 children, with an accepted age range of 3 to 59 months. At its August 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated it Good, judged safeguarding effective and found good progress across different starting points, including children receiving additional support.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care, bringing emotional, physical and other areas of learning into the day. In August 2024, activities included practical exploration, from digging with scoops to estimating quantities.
Babies and toddlers had space to move and experimented with instruments and kitchen pans. Outside, older children tackled climbing equipment, large tyres, bicycles and ride-on cars. This gave them different ways to practise movement and coordination.
Problem-solving also took a tangible form that August. Toddlers tried digging with two scoops, while older children estimated how much mixture would fill a bowl. The value lay in trying an idea and seeing what happened. Younger children used cards representing emotions to express feelings; older children took responsibility for helping tidy after lunch.
In August 2024, staff got to know families early and used those conversations to shape care around parents' wishes. Daily conversations and written assessments kept parents involved in children's learning. For families, that linked the nursery day with what happened at home.
Support that August included cooperation with others involved in children's care and targeted sessions funded to address additional learning needs, including language and communication. Meals were cooked on the premises each day, individual dietary requirements were accommodated, and older children brushed their teeth after lunch.
The address is 128 Orrell Road, Orrell, Wigan, WN5 8HJ. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, with year-round operation and closures for bank holidays and Christmas.
In August 2024, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. That is a dated participation fact rather than a promise about a family's entitlement or attendance arrangement.
Redwood House suits families seeking year-round childcare with an emphasis on practical activity and children's increasing independence. Its August 2024 examples span movement, emotional expression and everyday responsibility, giving substance to that emphasis. The Good judgement provides a clear inspection position; consistency of staff interaction is the corresponding point to weigh carefully.
