St Cuthbert's Early Years Centre

At a Glance

Emotions, independence and outdoor play give St Cuthbert's Early Years Centre its clearest character: The Colour Monster helped children discuss feelings, while outdoor risk checks gave them a part in deciding how to play safely in July 2022. These were practical experiences, with children taking an active role.

At its July 2022 inspection, Ofsted judged the centre Good and safeguarding effective. The centre has 76 places in total; children attending in July 2022 were aged 0 to 4. That age range is a dated snapshot.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets expectations for children's learning, development and care, with play providing opportunities to develop language, movement and independence. In July 2022, activities followed children's interests: babies built towers and clambered over large soft blocks, toddlers practised requesting help, and preschool children shared ideas and developed vocabulary.

Purpose-built outdoor play areas supported physical activity in July 2022. Children considered hazards before outdoor play, giving safety discussions a concrete purpose. Indoors, sand, water and painting offered different ways to explore materials; coloured sticks added faces to play dough.

There was a limitation in how adults extended this learning. In July 2022, some questions invited a short, fixed answer, leaving fewer opportunities for children to develop their own ideas or tackle problems independently.

Care and Support

At its July 2022 inspection, Ofsted found that key persons understood children's learning needs and that children with special educational needs and/or disabilities received support through external advice, additional resources and a quieter outdoor classroom. That space allowed more concentrated work on attention and communication.

During July 2022, The Colour Monster was used in time with key persons to help children discuss emotions. Independence also featured in small tasks, such as putting on an apron and storing finished work. Staff-parent relationships were strong then, and parents' views informed decisions about provision.

Children practised handwashing and brushed their teeth after morning snacks in July 2022. Lunch was less successful: some children faced lengthy waits to serve themselves, unsuitable cutlery and delays getting water. Those routines restricted opportunities to practise independence.

Practical Information

The address is St. Cuthbert's Catholic Primary School, Thorburn Road, Wigan, WN5 9LW. The centre is situated within the school. Reception admission is separate from nursery attendance; families must still apply for a school place.

In July 2022, the centre operated on weekdays across 51 weeks, with sessions running from 7.45am to 6pm. It also provided free early education for children aged two, three and four at that time. These arrangements describe that period rather than a current booking offer.

Things to Consider

  • Independent thinking. July 2022 practice sometimes gave children too little room to develop answers and solve challenges. During a visit, ask how staff now extend children's own ideas.
  • Lunch routines. In July 2022, waiting, cutlery and access to water disrupted some children's lunches. Ask how mealtimes now support self-service and independence.
  • Attendance fit. The July 2022 session window covered much of the working day. Which current attendance patterns and funded-hours arrangements would fit your family?

The Verdict

For families who value emotional learning, physical exploration and practical independence, the July 2022 account offers useful reasons to consider this centre. The quieter outdoor classroom adds substance to its support arrangements. The balance is clear: a Good inspection judgement, alongside specific weaknesses in questioning and lunchtime organisation that deserve attention when choosing care today.
