Separate buildings and gardens give Longscroft its character, with a wooden play trail, rabbits, an allotment and a mud kitchen extending play beyond the rooms. This is a rural nursery on the outskirts of Trowbridge and Bradford on Avon, where outdoor exploration has substantial space of its own. The grounds are a central part of the offer.
Longscroft Children's Nursery School accepts children from 3 months to 5 years and has capacity for 105 children in total. At its September 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated it Good and found safeguarding effective, with support helping children who needed additional help to make progress. That judgement provides a dated assessment of care and education, rather than a guarantee about every aspect of today's provision.
Morning, Short day and Long day bookings offer different attendance patterns. The practical detail needs close attention on Fridays, when opening hours finish earlier.
Bumble Bees takes babies from 3 months, with books, toys and furniture suited to different stages, a quiet bedroom containing cots, a kitchen for warming feeds and a garden with swings. Having a separate space for sleep matters: rest has a place away from the main play room. The bottle-warming kitchen also puts a practical part of baby care within the room's arrangements.
Dragonflies is the next step when a toddler is ready, emphasising social development and movement through a rear garden with climbing equipment, a side garden containing a sandpit and playhouse, and access to the communal playground. These spaces support different kinds of play, from climbing to sand exploration. The move is framed around readiness rather than a fixed birthday.
Ladybirds and Butterflies are the preschool rooms, housed in separate buildings with gardens and playground access, with regular gym sessions, dressing up and messy play supporting preparation for primary education. The emphasis shifts towards the next stage while retaining active, practical experiences. School preparation belongs within that play-based day.
The Early Years Foundation Stage brings together children's communication, movement, relationships and early learning through play. At Longscroft, this includes language, personal development, literacy, mathematics, exploring the world and creative expression. These are the foundations of the nursery day, rather than an extra programme setting it apart from other providers.
Development Matters guides personal plans and activities such as interactive games, crafts and physical play. A key worker helps shape each child's plan, connecting these experiences to individual development. This gives the account of learning a practical thread: what children do is linked to what they are working towards.
In September 2022, children chose how to develop their play, fetching water for sandcastles and experimenting with colour mixing and shapes concealed in gloop. These examples show exploration through materials rather than only adult-directed tasks. The same visit identified uneven teaching, however: opportunities to introduce vocabulary and reinforce manners were sometimes missed.
The wooden play trail and grassed area add balancing and movement to the communal playground, while the allotment and mud kitchen offer different ways to investigate materials and growing things. Longscroft encourages outdoor activity whatever the weather. For families who value daily physical play, the appeal lies in the variety of spaces rather than a single outdoor area.
In September 2022, babies used weatherproof clothing to crawl on damp grass, and children across the age groups had helped grow pumpkins in the allotment. Those are dated examples of the grounds being used for both movement and longer-term projects. They make the outdoor emphasis tangible.
Each child's key worker is part of the relationship with parents, and daily journals share the child's experience. Personal plans give that communication an educational purpose as well as a care function: families can follow the activities connected to their child's development. The arrangement links everyday updates with an individual account of learning.
At the September 2022 inspection, Ofsted found warm staff-child relationships, useful exchanges with parents and effective support for delayed speech and language, including puppets, visual prompts, song bags and small-group activities. The combination matters because extra help was woven into familiar play resources and communication with families.
In September 2022, staff drew on parents' accounts to understand each child's initial development, assessed progress and involved other professionals when extra support was needed. This is a dated description of the support process, rather than a blanket assurance about provision for every need. It offers a useful basis for discussing how an individual child's support would work.
Access to rooms and outdoor areas uses key pads, and the enclosed site has CCTV. These are concrete security arrangements; they sit separately from the dated safeguarding judgement. Babies' sleeping arrangements are described within Bumble Bees, keeping rest attached to the provision for the youngest children.
Food is cooked fresh in the on-site kitchen using locally purchased ingredients, with dietary requirements catered for. Snacks in the morning and afternoon are included in the hourly rate, while breakfast, lunch and tea are charged separately.
The nursery is at Trowle Common, Trowbridge, Wiltshire BA14 9BL. Opening hours run from 7.30am until 6pm Monday to Thursday, with a 5pm finish on Friday; it operates throughout the year except Bank Holidays. That makes the Friday finish a meaningful part of work and collection planning.
Morning starts at 8am, Short day runs from 9am to 3pm, and Long day from 8am to 6pm. These are booking patterns, distinct from the wider opening window. Early starts and funded sessions are also part of the enquiry route, through the nursery office by telephone or email.
Private parking serves the enclosed rural site on the outskirts of Trowbridge and Bradford on Avon. For families travelling by car, parking within the nursery grounds is a practical advantage alongside the separate buildings and outdoor spaces.
Funded sessions are offered alongside paid attendance. For private hours, the hourly rate includes morning and afternoon snacks; breakfast, lunch and tea carry separate charges, so food needs its own place in the family budget. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.
Longscroft suits families seeking either morning attendance or a longer Short day or Long day pattern, with substantial outdoor space and a separate baby sleep area among its strongest practical features. Dragonflies' different gardens and the preschool gym sessions give the progression between stages concrete substance.
The September 2022 Good judgement supports the overall picture, while the teaching and routine concerns deserve specific discussion. Families whose working day depends on Friday care should settle that session detail before making their decision.
Ofsted rated Longscroft Good at its September 2022 inspection and found safeguarding effective. Improvement priorities concerned extending learning consistently and preparing routine activities more thoroughly.
