Conversation, growing independence and learning tailored to each child give Mere Pre-School Nursery its character. At its July 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated it Good, finding effective safeguarding and well-taught learning that gave particular attention to children's language development. The practical examples matter: adults allowed time for answers, children helped themselves at snack time, and learning plans started with what each child could already do.
Based at Mere School on Springfield Road in Mere, the nursery has capacity for 20 children aged two to five. That is the whole-setting total, rather than a promise about the size of any activity group. Its opening hours are 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday.
The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care: daily experiences bring together communication, physical development, relationships and other areas of learning. Here, Development Matters and the Early Learning Goals help staff consider children's development and plan their next steps. These are planning references, rather than additional clubs or activities.
In July 2024, learning was adapted to children's existing skills, with adults choosing experiences that stretched them appropriately. Mathematical learning had tangible examples. Older children worked with addition and subtraction, while dough and tools gave children opportunities to explore colour and shape. This made learning part of an activity children could handle and change themselves.
Language work was equally practical that July. Adults sustained conversations, introduced vocabulary while talking about young birds and repeated words with clear pronunciation. They also paused to let children think before responding. The emphasis was on giving children room to participate, rather than simply supplying an answer.
Everyday tasks carried learning too. In July 2024, children practised managing toileting and handwashing, older children attempted their own shoes and clothing, and snack time involved serving themselves. These small responsibilities gave children opportunities to do things for themselves before moving to the next stage of education.
Each child is allocated a key person when they start. That adult considers the child's development and plans what comes next, giving families a clear point of continuity between care and learning. The manager also holds the designated safeguarding lead and SENCO roles, supported by deputy roles.
In July 2024, staff got to know children before they began attending, helping relationships develop early. Communication with families included updates about learning and suggestions for activities at home. This connected children's experiences in the setting with what parents could continue outside it.
At the July 2024 inspection, Ofsted found especially effective support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, including those awaiting diagnosis, with collaboration between families, staff and other agencies helping children make progress. Participation in a small circle-time group was one concrete example of that support. It gives families a useful starting point for discussing how an individual child's participation would be planned.
Behaviour guidance had a clear limitation in July 2024. Adults intervened quickly when safety could be affected, but explanations were inconsistent: children were sometimes told to stop without being helped to understand the possible consequences. The improvement priority was to make those reasons clearer, so children understood expectations as well as following instructions.
The address is Mere School, Springfield Road, Mere, Warminster, BA12 6EW. The nursery opens throughout the year, with closures for Christmas, bank holidays and school training days. The 9am to 3pm weekday opening window is a practical consideration for families fitting childcare around work.
Enquiries can be made by telephone, email or the contact form. In July 2024, the setting received funding for early education for children aged two, three and four; that dated participation should be kept separate from any individual family's eligibility.
Policies are reviewed annually by the manager and committee chair, and a paper copy is available in the preschool. Parents also have signposts to Spurgeon's Children's Centre for family support and activities, and Twinkl for activity ideas at home.
Mere suits families seeking care for children aged two to five within a weekday, school-length opening window. Its strongest evidence concerns conversation, practical independence and individual learning, with a key person providing continuity. The July 2024 findings also give a clear point to explore: how consistently adults explain behavioural expectations. For parents whose schedules fit the hours, those everyday details are more useful than a long list of activities.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good at its inspection on 10 July 2024. Safeguarding arrangements were effective; the improvement priority concerned explaining behavioural expectations and their consequences more consistently.
