Bright Horizons Winchester Day Nursery and Preschool

At a Glance

A tree house, gardening beds and an all-weather garden give Bright Horizons Winchester a clear outdoor character. At 3 Wales Street, the nursery combines four age-appropriate rooms with garden access that lets children move between indoor play and outdoor exploration. For families who value hands-on learning, the mud kitchen and sandpit are useful details: children have places to mix, build and experiment.

At its June 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Outstanding, found safeguarding effective and judged that children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, made excellent progress. That is a dated judgement, and the later organisational safeguarding notice discussed below is material to a decision today.

The nursery accepts children from 4 months to 60 months. Standard full-day care and stretched funded sessions serve different attendance arrangements, with the timings and charge structure explained below.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

EYFS provides the framework for children's learning, development and care, so learning through play sits alongside communication, physical development and growing independence. Winchester also uses the group-wide Bright Beginnings Curriculum, which brings practical abilities and life skills into learning activities. The group-wide Nurture Approach places emotional wellbeing and relationships alongside that learning. These additions sit within the EYFS requirements.

In June 2022, sensory exploration had a clear learning purpose. Children crushed berries into water, then used jugs and pipettes to explore how much liquid different containers could hold. Babies explored cereal with their hands, while toddlers worked with sand and play dough. Those examples show how everyday materials can introduce children to texture, movement and mathematical ideas through things they can handle themselves.

Language also ran through the June 2022 day. Younger children sang nursery rhymes; older children discussed unfamiliar vocabulary while sharing books. Staff shaped activities around children's interests and adjusted experiences to individual development. The practical implication was a day in which conversation and exploration worked together, rather than learning being confined to a separate teaching slot.

Outdoor and Community Life

The landscaped, all-weather garden has free-flow access. Its raised beds support gardening, while the tree house, sandpit and mud kitchen give outdoor play different purposes. Green Gardeners supports nature-based learning; nearby Winnall Moors Nature Reserve also contributes to that offer.

In June 2022, older children practised riding tricycles, running along a garden path and balancing on planks. Younger children pulled themselves upright and moved along furniture. These were different physical challenges for different stages of development, with adults supervising children as they learnt to judge manageable risks.

Care and Support

Relationships were central to settling in June 2022. The key-person arrangement gave children a familiar adult who understood their interests and needs, and children formed close attachments. Online communication also helped parents follow their child's learning and development. For families, the useful combination was continuity for the child and an ongoing account of what happened during nursery time.

Daily care in June 2022 recognised the differences between ages. Babies kept their home routines, toddlers practised making choices at snack time, and older children served themselves food and managed handwashing and toileting. Independence developed through ordinary routines, with expectations changing as children grew.

An onsite chef prepares fresh meals each day. Standard fees include meals and snacks, alongside nappies, wipes, creams and formula; funded-hours food has a separate, non-mandatory charge, described under Practical Information.

In a notice dated 22 June 2026, Ofsted required Bright Horizons to strengthen organisational safeguarding leadership, oversight, training and the handling of concerns and allegations, with actions due by 1 August 2026. The notice concerns arrangements across the organisation and explicitly does not establish concerns at every individual nursery. Its latest published position was that the organisation had not demonstrated consistently effective safeguarding across its provision and that its response would be monitored. The earlier Winchester judgement should therefore be read alongside this later action, rather than treated as a current safeguarding assurance.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. The standard Full Day session runs from 8am to 6pm, so the opening window and the booked session are different. That distinction matters to a family needing care before the standard session begins.

Funded childcare uses 10-hour sessions beginning at nursery opening time. Attendance outside a funded session is charged as additional childcare, but purchasing additional hours is not a condition of taking a funded place. Standard private childcare and funded childcare therefore have different starting arrangements as well as different charging structures.

The nursery operates across the year, closing for one inset day, bank and public holidays, and the period between Christmas and New Year. These closures matter when matching childcare to a working calendar.

Getting There

The address is 3 Wales Street, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 0ET. Onsite parking and a buggy park support families travelling by car or with a pushchair, while Winchester train station and Junction 9 of the M3 are nearby commuting connections.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded childcare is offered, with 15-hour and 30-hour entitlements stretched across 50 weeks, subject to eligibility. Stretching spreads the entitlement over more of the year, rather than concentrating it into term time; private hours beyond the entitlement are charged separately.

For private care, meals and snacks are included in the fee, as are the everyday consumables described above. During funded hours, consumables are supplied and food is charged separately; the food charge is non-mandatory and does not determine access to a funded place. This distinction is important when comparing the cost of two attendance patterns.

Fees are paid ahead of attendance through monthly direct debit, and a registration charge applies. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation, which should distinguish funded hours, additional childcare and food.

Things to Consider

  • Organisational safeguarding action. The 22 June 2026 notice required changes by 1 August 2026. Ask how the actions have been implemented at Winchester, including escalation of concerns, staff supervision and oversight of allegations.
  • Early-start arrangements. Opening begins at 7.30am, while the standard Full Day session starts at 8am and funded sessions begin at opening. At a personal tour, establish which arrangement matches the hours your family needs.
  • Garden use and settling. Free-flow garden access and four age-appropriate rooms shape the day. Use a weekday personal tour to discuss how a child of your age moves between spaces and builds a relationship with their key person.

The Verdict

Winchester suits families seeking either standard full-day attendance or stretched funded-session arrangements, with outdoor exploration built into the setting. The garden, Green Gardeners and onsite food preparation give the offer practical substance, while the June 2022 account provides detailed examples of learning and age-sensitive routines.

The later organisational safeguarding action carries substantial weight. A decision should take account of that notice alongside the dated Outstanding judgement, with clear answers about how Winchester now applies the required changes.
