One large classroom brings Belmont’s children together across ages, rather than separating them into a sequence of age-based rooms. The nursery serves children aged two to five in a residential part of Maidenhead, with outdoor space and a shared classroom. It has capacity for 25 children in total. For parents, the defining choice is this mixed-age arrangement: younger and older children share their nursery environment.
At its September 2021 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective. That dated judgement comes with two important qualifications: teaching did not consistently stretch children’s thinking, and some seated activities lasted longer than young children could manage. These are useful points against which to assess the nursery’s day.
The early years foundation stage sets expectations for children’s learning, development and care, including learning through everyday play and activities. At Belmont, the September 2021 curriculum combined children’s interests with planned themes. This gave staff two starting points for activities: something a child was already curious about, and something introduced to the group.
In September 2021, conversation was woven into ordinary experiences. A vase of flowers prompted staff to introduce words about their fragility, while children talked with adults and one another. The practical value is clear: vocabulary can develop around something a child is actually looking at, rather than only through a separate language activity.
Mathematics also had everyday uses in September 2021. Children counted plates around meals and used fruit for simple number work. Building with straws brought discussions about vehicles and wheel sizes. These examples connect numbers and comparisons to objects children can handle and decisions they can make.
The limitations mattered too. In September 2021, adults sometimes missed opportunities to develop children’s ideas further, and prolonged sitting led children to lose interest. A shared activity needs both an engaging subject and a suitable pace; the inspection identified weaknesses in that balance.
Belmont has outdoor space and one large shared classroom. That combination makes the indoor group arrangement only part of the setting’s physical character: outside space is another important part of the nursery environment.
In September 2021, returning from the garden involved children taking off their coats, putting them away and switching to indoor shoes. Those small routines gave independence a practical purpose. Children were doing jobs for themselves as part of the day, rather than treating self-care as a separate lesson.
In September 2021, staff gathered information from parents about children’s existing abilities when they started. This supplied a starting point for planning activities, rather than assuming that children of the same age needed identical experiences. Staff also worked with other settings children attended to coordinate their learning.
Parents received updates about learning in September 2021, and books went home daily. That offered a concrete connection between nursery and home: families had something to read together, alongside information about what their child had been doing. These are inspection-era examples of communication and should be read with that date in mind.
At the September 2021 inspection, Ofsted found that staff helped children with communication difficulties through strategies that encouraged speech and vocabulary development. The useful detail is the mechanism: support was directed towards helping children express themselves, rather than relying solely on their participation in group conversation.
In September 2021, children discussed toothbrushing and food as part of learning about health. Adults also helped them think about safe ways to use knives and move chairs. Care therefore included explaining everyday risks and habits in language children could use.
Social expectations had similarly practical examples in September 2021. Children took turns carrying drinks at snack time, used polite language around meals and helped one another with belongings. These small exchanges gave cooperation a place in ordinary routines.

Belmont suits families seeking care for children aged two to five who favour a shared, mixed-age classroom and outdoor space. Its September 2021 practice offers concrete examples of conversation, everyday mathematics and independence through ordinary routines. The balance to assess is equally concrete: how adults challenge different children within the shared group, and how they keep the day moving at a pace young children can sustain.
