Sunninghill Playcentre

At a Glance

Village walks, autumn collections and a pretend hairdresser give Sunninghill Playcentre a recognisable character. At its October 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated it Good and judged safeguarding effective. The setting has capacity for 34 children; those attending in October 2024 were aged 0 to 4.

The strongest detail is how everyday experiences became material for play: a walk connected road safety with autumn, while collected leaves and fir cones returned to the nursery for exploration.

The Nursery Experience

In October 2024, learning followed the early years foundation stage, the framework for children's learning, development and care. Themes and children's interests shaped activities, connecting learning with familiar experiences rather than keeping it separate from daily life.

Babies had spaces arranged for practising movement and walking. Older children used pencils and notepads to take appointments in a pretend hairdresser, giving early writing a purpose. Action songs combined listening with movement, including identifying body parts and balancing beanbags.

Books also had a place in the day. In October 2024, even the youngest children selected books and handled them carefully, while expressive storytelling drew children's attention. Comparing pumpkins and squash introduced words for size through objects children could investigate.

At the October 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that teaching in some adult-led activities was uneven and insufficiently adapted to individual needs, and called for stronger staff monitoring and coaching. This is the important qualification to the Good judgement.

Care and Support

In October 2024, familiar key people provided comfort, and staff learnt about family interests before children started attending. Conversations could then draw on experiences from home, such as swimming lessons. Regular updates about learning gave parents material to build on at home.

Daily routines offered practical opportunities for independence. In October 2024, children practised toileting and handwashing, and younger children received help with cutlery. Staff used consistent boundaries and rewards for positive choices, making expectations understandable. Staff training included work on supporting positive behaviour.

Practical Information

In October 2024, opening hours were 8am to 5.30pm from Monday to Thursday and 8am to 5pm on Friday, with operation throughout the year. At that time, the nursery provided funded early education for two-, three- and four-year-olds. These are dated arrangements rather than a current attendance offer.

Things to Consider

  • Teaching consistency. October 2024 brought a recommendation for closer monitoring and coaching during adult-led activities. How teaching is adapted to each child deserves attention when choosing this setting.
  • Attendance fit. The October 2024 opening week ended earlier on Friday. What current attendance arrangements would suit your child's age and your working week?

The Verdict

On its October 2024 showing, Sunninghill Playcentre will appeal to families drawn to learning through village outings, imaginative play and everyday independence. Familiar adults and communication with parents were central to that account. The balance is clear: appealing everyday experiences, alongside a specific need for greater consistency in adult-led teaching.
