Nature and forest gardens give Poperinghe Pre-School a clear outdoor identity, alongside four rooms where children can choose their own play materials. This is a charity-run setting managed by a voluntary parent committee, with capacity for 75 children at the AWS Community Complex in Arborfield. The combination makes outdoor exploration and parent involvement central to its character.
At its January 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the pre-school Good overall, with Outstanding personal development, effective safeguarding and exceptionally strong support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Those judgements belong to that visit. The children attending then were aged two to four.
Morning, afternoon and full-day sessions sit alongside breakfast and afternoon extensions, giving families several ways to arrange attendance rather than a single fixed day.
The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the framework for learning through play across different areas of development. Resources are arranged into zones, and children can select materials for themselves across the four rooms. That gives choice a practical role in the day: children can follow an interest rather than depend on an adult handing out the next activity.
The purpose-built premises support play indoors and outdoors, with nature and forest gardens adding space for exploration. These gardens provide space for outdoor learning alongside indoor activities.
In January 2023, children moved between indoor and outdoor activities and took part in forest school, exploring nature through creative play. Examples included arranging feathers and other natural materials into artwork and acting out stories among trees. These experiences joined observation, imagination and making things within the same activity.
Children's interests also shaped what happened next during that January 2023 visit. Boxes and props became a rocket, while staff introduced planet names and their characteristics during the play. During bug searches and hide-and-seek, adults explained more demanding vocabulary. The practical point is the connection between a child's chosen activity and the language adults bring into it.
In January 2023, the forestry space included a fire pit, while ride-on toys, climbing frames and balance beams provided different ways to be active. Children also experienced reptile encounters, watched eggs hatch and took caterpillars home. These examples gave them contact with living things beyond pictures or toys.
Celebrations drew on children's families and home languages during the same visit. Staff learnt words and phrases from children, and an autumn festival from Nepal involved costumes, dance and food. This made children's own experiences part of shared learning, giving families a recognisable place within the pre-school day.
In January 2023, staff-child relationships included enthusiastic exchanges and opportunities for children to share experiences from home. Adults supported considerate behaviour through everyday play: children making aliens from play dough passed tools to each other and commented positively on one another's creations. Kindness had a concrete expression in how children worked together.
Support arrangements at that visit included additional staff for children with SEND, quieter spaces created by reorganising rooms, and targeted plans developed with parents and other professionals. The senior team sought extra funding for resources, including a private speech and language therapist. These were specific mechanisms for adapting provision to individual children, rather than expecting everyone to manage the same space and activity in the same way.
January 2023 arrangements also included safeguarding training, paediatric first-aid training and recruitment and induction procedures. Communication with parents covered children's experiences and ways to continue learning at home. The value for families lay in connecting what happened at pre-school with the child's life beyond it.
For joining families, the voluntary registration contribution includes the personalised story Molly and Mo start Pre-School and a parent handbook. The story gives the transition a named resource that can be shared with a child; the handbook supports parents through the same change.

The core choices are a morning session from 9am to noon, an afternoon session from noon to 3pm, or a full day from 9am to 3pm. Breakfast Club runs from 8am to 9am and includes breakfast in its fee. An additional afternoon hour runs from 3pm to 4pm.
Combined patterns extend those choices: breakfast with the morning session runs from 8am to noon; the full day with the afternoon extension runs from 9am to 4pm; and breakfast, full day and the extension together run from 8am to 4pm. The distinction matters when comparing routines: the core full day ends at 3pm, while the longest combined pattern ends later.
In January 2023, the pre-school operated on weekdays during school terms and also ran a holiday club in some holidays. That is a dated operating picture, separate from the session choices above.
In January 2023, the setting received funding for free early education for children aged two, three and four. This establishes its funding participation at that time, rather than a promise about a family's current entitlement or attendance arrangement.
The registration contribution is voluntary and requested when the application form is submitted. It includes the transition story and handbook. The fees page sets out the separate session combinations and a late-collection charge, helping parents distinguish core attendance from extensions.
Poperinghe suits families considering morning sessions, afternoon sessions or a full day with extensions, and who value child-led play alongside nature and forest gardens. Its voluntary parent committee adds a direct role for parents in the setting's management. The January 2023 judgements provide a positive dated assessment, balanced by the clear improvement priority around planning children's next learning steps.
Ofsted rated it Good overall in January 2023, with Outstanding personal development. More precise planning of children's next learning steps was the improvement priority.
