Two outdoor learning areas give Pipit Class its most concrete point of distinction. Nursery children belong to Allendale Primary School’s Early Years Unit alongside Reception-age children, placing the provision within the school’s teaching structure. Teaching staff are supported by a higher level teaching assistant who also teaches the early years children.
Outdoor learning has two spaces here, giving children places beyond the classroom in which to learn. Pipit’s activities include maths in groups, while work with Kestrel Class brings contact with another class into the early years experience. These are concrete elements of the provision: outdoor learning, group work and activity involving other children in the school.
Early reading adds a more focused teaching strand. In November 2023, children in the early years were taught the relationship between letters and sounds, with adults demonstrating pronunciation and giving children opportunities to rehearse new sounds. Adults picked up pronunciation errors promptly. Assessment informed the phonics work children received, and extra help enabled those needing support to catch up. For parents, the practical significance is teaching that responds to what a child can already do, with practice and correction built into learning.
Support has a school-level contact route. Parents with concerns about learning, anxiety or self-esteem can speak with staff, and the special educational needs coordinator can be contacted through the school. The school describes support that can begin with additional help and, where necessary, involve specialist advice. Services include Literacy Support, School Health and Primary Mental Health. That gives families a route for raising a concern and discussing whether further involvement is appropriate.
Safeguarding responsibilities sit with a designated lead and a deputy, supported by two safeguarding governors. Staff receive child protection training at least annually, with updates between training sessions; the child protection policy is reviewed at least once a year. Staff undergo enhanced DBS checks, as do governors, while volunteers working regularly in school undergo DBS checks. The lead and deputy receive continuing training and provide colleagues with advice when concerns arise. These arrangements establish who staff turn to and how safeguarding knowledge is kept up to date.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as separate decisions.
Sharing the Early Years Unit with Reception-age children is part of the nursery’s everyday organisation. It should be considered separately from admissions: familiarity with a school setting does not secure a place there.
Enquiries go through the school office on 01434 683376 or by email to admin@allendaleprimary.northumberland.sch.uk. The school is in Allendale, Northumberland, NE47 9PS.
