At a Glance

Role-play, painting and a book corner give Bollin’s nursery its character: children learn through play, with room to choose activities as well as join adult-led learning. Nursery Cubs belongs to the early years provision at Bollin Primary School in Bowdon, on Apsley Grove.

Children normally start in September after their third birthday, although January and April entry applications are considered. The emphasis is on development rather than a single starting point: activities take account of children’s interests and the stage they have reached. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 21 and 22 September 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Play has a clear purpose here. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning about language, movement and relationships with early literacy, maths, creativity and understanding the world. In everyday terms, children practise sharing, taking turns and doing things independently alongside acquiring new knowledge.

The balance between activities chosen by children and those directed by adults changes with their development. Role-play and practical games sit alongside cutting, sticking and painting; the book corner provides a place for reading. Learning extends outdoors as well as taking place in the classroom. Children can pursue their own projects and practise concentrating, while group activities bring them together to exchange experiences.

Physical learning includes climbing and balancing equipment, experimenting with movement and responding to music. Early science introduces floating and sinking, investigating how things work and comparing objects through weighing and measuring. These are practical ways to connect movement, language and thinking. In September 2022, early years children responded positively to stories, rhymes and sound activities, developing the listening skills that support early phonics.

Care and Support

Settling involves parents as well as children. Staggered starts and stay-and-play sessions allow families to work with the early years team during the move into nursery. Tapestry learning journeys, workshops and discussions with teaching staff provide further opportunities to share learning and talk about progress and well-being. Parents’ observations contribute to assessments, helping staff plan children’s next steps.

In September 2022, children in early years adjusted promptly to the setting, and adults understood their individual needs and provided extra help where needed. Across the school, SEND support includes individual learning plans and structured interventions, with teachers and teaching assistants working alongside families and, where appropriate, external professionals.

The school’s pastoral provision includes The Orchard, a space for calming down or taking a break. Parents are involved in discussions when pastoral support is needed. At lunchtime, the school has a team working across the dining area and playground, linking eating with opportunities to play together and develop social skills.

Moving On to Reception

A separate application is essential. Attending Bollin’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must apply again via the Admissions Team at Trafford, and allocation follows Trafford’s admissions criteria. Familiarity with the school should therefore be kept separate from the question of securing a place.

For the 2026 admission cycle, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. Once a place has been allocated, new Nursery and Reception parents are invited to an information evening to meet the class teacher, tour the school and complete administrative arrangements.

Practical Information

The nursery allocates 15 hours in two patterns: full days on Monday and Tuesday plus Wednesday morning, or Wednesday afternoon followed by full days on Thursday and Friday. Full days run from 8:45am to 3:15pm. Wednesday’s morning session is 8:45am to 11:45am; its afternoon session runs from 12:15pm to 3:15pm.

Extra hours depend on space. Top-up places, including those covered by eligibility for 30-hour funding, are allocated subject to availability. Families needing more than the allocated pattern should factor that condition into their childcare plans.

Contact the school office for nursery enquiries and details of the application process. Parent visits can also be arranged by calling 0161 928 8900 or emailing bollinadmin@inspiringlearners.co.uk; tours include the building and facilities, children’s activities and time for questions.
