At a Glance

A dedicated outdoor play area and a Year 6 buddy give Bowdon Prep’s youngest children two distinct ways to explore school life: through their own play and through a familiar older pupil. Kindergarten is the nursery provision within Bowdon Preparatory School on Ashley Road, Bowdon, Altrincham. It covers ages 3 to 4, with children able to begin in the term of their third birthday.

Boys joined the welcome alongside girls from September 2026. This is an independent school nursery, with play and creative activities forming the starting point for learning.

The Nursery Day

Half-termly topics give children something new to investigate, while play provides the means to do it. Creative activities sit alongside opportunities to develop independence and practise being with other children. The dedicated outdoor play area gives that exploration a physical setting, with space intended for imaginative and shared play.

Kindergarten uses the school’s own early years curriculum, with exemption from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learning and development requirements. EYFS safeguarding and welfare requirements still apply. In November 2025, ISI found that the applicable EYFS requirements were being met in the early years provision.

Physical learning has concrete forms. In the early years, handling materials that can be shaped develops small hand movements, while outdoor throwing, jumping and balance activities exercise larger movements. Drama and PE also give children ways to express ideas through their bodies.

Social learning happens in ordinary exchanges. Adults demonstrate how to share equipment, wait for a turn and use polite language. During the November 2025 visit, Kindergarten children encouraged one another spontaneously during games. These small interactions matter: playing alongside others also becomes practice in friendship.

Care and Support

Each Kindergarten child is paired with a Year 6 buddy. Alongside the settling programme for new children, this provides a familiar pupil beyond the nursery group. Families can discuss concerns with staff through regular communication, giving home and school a way to work together on emotional and social needs.

Appropriate staffing ratios were maintained across the early years day in November 2025. Inspectors also found sufficient first-aid-trained staff, including paediatric first-aid provision for the early years. SEND support follows assess-plan-do-review: teachers, the SENDCo and parents agree support, monitor it and reconsider what the child needs. Admissions depend on the school being able to meet those needs. Accessibility. The admissions policy warns that mobility difficulties can present challenges because most classrooms are upstairs. Families should discuss individual requirements before admission.

Lunch is an optional charged addition. The school’s daily hot lunch includes a vegetarian choice, with fruit, vegetables, bread and milk among the accompaniments. This gives families a school meal option alongside tuition.

Safeguarding terminology. The November 2025 inspection recommended clearer staff understanding of whistleblowing and low-level concern terminology. This is a relevant follow-up point for families discussing staff training.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. The admissions policy allocates places by application order and headteacher discretion, subject to availability; it specifies conditional preference for siblings and children of former pupils, rather than nursery attendance.

Ask the admissions team to confirm the progression arrangements for existing Kindergarten pupils and any application steps required. Registration expresses interest but does not bind either the family or the school to a place. Familiarity with school life should therefore be kept separate from the admissions decision.

Practical Information

Kindergarten attendance includes mornings and full days, with minimum attendance requirements varying by Kindergarten stage and term. Tuition is charged termly, with payment due at the beginning of each term. Contact admissions@bowdonprep.org.uk for enquiries or to arrange a visit; Kindergarten applicants can attend Stay and Play.

Activate provides separately booked care around the school day, from 7:30am to 6:00pm. Ask the school to confirm current holiday-club arrangements, including the provider, venue and availability for Kindergarten children. Advance bookings require payment to secure places; occasional sessions depend on space, staffing and resources. Activate collection and drop-off use the Prep Hall door and intercom.

Pascoe and Willis runs the on-site Uniform Shop, while the BPS Society organises pre-loved uniform sales. These give families two routes for obtaining school clothing.
