Den building and bug hunting give Cloverlea’s nursery its character. Nature exploration sits alongside stories and songs, with communication and social development shaping the learning. This is the school’s own Nursery class in Timperley, with capacity for up to 26 children.
Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 8 and 9 October 2024. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Play provides the starting point. Cloverlea’s nature led approach includes exploring sticks, making dens and discovering insects, alongside learning to care for the environment. These activities give children practical experiences to talk about and opportunities to explore together. Language has a clear place in the day.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together early maths and literacy, physical development, creative activities, understanding the world, communication and personal development. Cloverlea describes adult supported play inside and outside. Its starting guidance for 2020 described the Nursery and Reception classrooms occupying a separate building from the main school, giving the youngest classes their own physical base.
In October 2024, nursery children enjoyed rhymes, singing and deliberately selected stories, with staff concentrating on speaking and communication. This gives the nursery’s language emphasis substance: children encounter words through listening and joining in, as well as through practical exploration.
Assessment informs what comes next. Staff use daily observations to plan further learning, sharing records through itrack. Parents can contribute achievements from home through ClassDojo, so the picture of a child’s development extends beyond the classroom.
Settling involves time to build relationships before speech and language screening begins. Cloverlea uses WellComm once children have settled with adults and other children; the screening comes with activities to address language needs. This connects identifying a difficulty with a practical next step.
The September 2021 joining guidance included a classroom visit with the nursery teacher, an Early Years Prospectus and a Welcome pack. It also encouraged families to practise managing coats, using the toilet and asking for help. These are useful preparations for the everyday demands of a nursery session. By October 2024, children were becoming familiar with established routines quickly.
For SEND discussions, families can contact the coordinator through senco@cloverlea.org.uk or the school office. Learning adjustments. The October 2024 inspection identified a school-wide concern that some staff did not consistently adapt teaching for pupils with SEND, alongside insufficient clarity about essential knowledge in a small number of subjects. Those findings were not identified specifically as nursery weaknesses; families considering additional support should keep the distinction in mind.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through their local authority’s Common Application Form, ranking their preferred schools. Trafford residents can apply through Trafford’s admissions service. Choosing the nursery and applying for school are separate decisions.
Families can choose five full days, three or four full days, or morning or afternoon attendance. This gives a choice between shorter sessions and fewer, longer days, rather than a single attendance pattern.
Nursery application forms can be obtained through the school office. Further places may be offered during the year when nursery numbers allow, so availability depends on the existing group size.
