Stories, rhymes and a purpose-built nursery give St Hugh's youngest children a distinct starting point within this Catholic primary school in Timperley. Families can choose part-time or full-time provision, making the length of the nursery day a practical part of the decision.
Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good following its inspection on 1 and 2 October 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Play and independence shape the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach. In plain parent language, this means helping children communicate, manage feelings and develop physically alongside early reading, maths, creative expression and discovering the world. St Hugh's follows Development Matters, with particular emphasis on language, physical development and personal and social development. These foundations take precedence in the approach to learning.
Children are encouraged to investigate, try ideas, persevere and find their own ways to solve problems. Resources are organised for children to use independently, giving them opportunities to make choices and explore. Observations and assessments inform subsequent planning, so the intended next steps build on what a child already knows.
Books bring a concrete focus. In October 2024, nursery children had frequent opportunities to hear stories, poetry and rhymes. Catholic learning also begins in early years through The Vine and The Branches. Beyond the nursery building, children took part in the Big Lent Walk by making circuits of the school field, connecting movement with a shared charitable activity.
Nursery children settled successfully in October 2024. The EYFS curriculum also makes space for discussing emotions, giving children practice in expressing how they feel. Parents can join early years Stay and Pray sessions during the year, while class pages carry learning updates and photographs.
Additional needs. The October 2024 school-wide findings included delays in recognising some children's SEND, with consequences for timely support. Assessment in some subjects also needed greater precision, and behaviour routines were applied unevenly by some staff. These were school-wide concerns rather than nursery-specific findings; families should keep that scope in mind.
The school kitchen prepares dishes using UK-sourced meat, seafood and poultry, alongside vegetables, fruit and salad. Families with dietary requirements can discuss them with the school. This provides a direct route for raising food needs before choosing meals.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Trafford Local Authority, or their home local authority, within the normal Reception application timetable. Completing the school's supplementary form does not replace that application.
Nursery attendance is not listed as a priority criterion in the school's current oversubscription arrangements. Treat the nursery choice and the later Reception application as separate decisions. The school also requests supplementary information and relevant documents by email to receptionadmissions@sthughstimperley.org.
Morning sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am, afternoons from 12.30pm to 3.30pm, and full-time days from 8.45am to 3.30pm. The place options comprise 15-hour part-time and 30-hour full-time patterns. The different collection times matter when planning work or arranging another child's pickup.
Applications go directly to the school: complete the nursery application form and email it with the requested documents to admissions@sthughstimperley.org. Enquiries can also go to the office on 0161 962 1852. Contact the school for current charges.
Nursery uniform includes a red logo polo shirt, a logo jumper or cardigan, dark trousers or jogging pants, and suitable footwear. A red-and-white checked dress is a summer option. The separate nursery clothing list gives families a practical starting point when preparing for sessions.
