Jelly to investigate, seeds to grow and water to pour: hands-on discovery gives Ashford School’s nursery provision its character. Bridge Nursery and The Stables Nursery cater for ages 0–3, while Nightingale Nursery and Ashford Prep School Nursery cover ages 3–4. These are distinct settings, so the choice involves both age and location.
Bridge sits on the senior school site at East Hill. The Stables and the prep-school nursery sit on the prep site at Great Chart. In its inspection of 23 to 25 April 2024, ISI judged the registered early-years provision at Bridge and The Stables outstanding. Those judgements belong to the two named settings.
Choice shapes the learning. At The Stables, staff adapt activities to children’s developing interests, and children gather materials outdoors to add to their constructions. Books also prompt creative work: children use remembered sea creatures from stories as ideas for pictures. Learning grows from something that has caught their attention.
Bridge combines sensory exploration with physical challenges. Children investigate plants, ice shapes and jelly, while outdoor climbing equipment and obstacle courses develop coordination. Puzzles give smaller movements a workout too. Gardening extends an interest over time, with children planting seeds, caring for them and watching their growth.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings different aspects of development together through play. In the prep-school nursery, three large rooms accommodate activities across its seven learning areas. A marble run becomes a shared problem to solve: children exchange suggestions, negotiate and agree how to build it. This makes cooperation part of the activity itself.
At The Stables, water trays and funnels invite children to scoop, measure and experiment with pouring. Bridge adds experiences including yoga, musical instruments and learning about dental care. The April 2024 findings show learning through conversation, movement and exploration, with adults extending what children can do.
Relationships give the day its continuity. At Bridge, staff know their key children’s emotional needs and respond sensitively when a child needs reassurance after sleep. Parents receive feedback on development, including the two-year progress check, and workshops help families support children through difficult emotions.
Settling at The Stables takes account of home routines. Staff adjust arrangements to individual children, including changes involving feeding and sleep. Visual timetables help children understand the next activity, while family photo albums connect nursery life with familiar people at home.
Support for special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is specific to the child. Bridge uses gestures and signing alongside tailored activities; The Stables also uses sound recordings to help children communicate. Safeguarding was effective at both registered settings in April 2024.
Food arrangements differ by provision. For Summer Term 2026, Nightingale provided breakfast, a hot lunch, snacks and tea. Parents could opt out and supply the food themselves after speaking with the management team; charges applied if the agreed food was not supplied. At Bridge, choosing fruit and helping clear crockery made snack time an opportunity to practise independence.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat Reception as a separate application, following the normal route and deadline for the school you choose. Familiarity with nursery staff and routines should not be treated as an admissions entitlement.
Booking patterns vary. Bridge and The Stables have day and extended-day options; Nightingale has day and whole-week arrangements, while the prep nursery has a five-day termly model inclusive of 15 hours of Free Early Education entitlement.
Nightingale’s Summer Term 2026 arrangements used an 8.30am–5.30pm day, with optional care from 7.30am and until 6.30pm. Its universal funded entitlement began in the term after a child’s third birthday and was stretched across 48 weeks, up to 12 hours weekly. Extended entitlement was excluded. Additional hours and meals could attract charges; a funded-only afternoon arrangement was subject to availability. That summer arrangement also exempted funded-only children from registration fees, deposits and uniform or school-bag purchases.
