Nursery at Outwoods Primary School

Bobble Hat gives Outwoods Primary School’s nursery its own identity within the school in Atherstone. A morning ending at noon and a longer day ending at 3pm provide two distinct patterns for families. Both begin at 9am, making the nursery’s hours a practical starting point when weighing up the daily routine.
In July 2023, children in the early years enjoyed their learning, and the nursery environment sparked their interest. Familiar routines were in place from the start. Those findings give the provision a clear character: an engaging introduction to school life, with predictable routines helping children understand what happens next.
Learning begins within the early years foundation stage (EYFS). In July 2023, Outwoods’ early years curriculum introduced vocabulary across school subjects. This gave children language for later learning from the beginning.
The nursery’s Bobble Hat activities include Share a Story and Songs and Rhymes. These give families concrete points of connection with their child’s learning: stories to share and familiar songs to return to together. Language is a useful thread through the provision.
Early learning needs attention. In July 2023, some children in the early years moved to new mathematical topics before securing essential number knowledge. Staff also gave insufficient attention to correct letter and numeral formation. These weaknesses affected the accuracy of children’s written work and the foundations for later mathematics. For parents, the useful distinction is between enjoying an activity and mastering the skill it introduces.
Additional needs are addressed through a school structure involving class teachers, teaching assistants and the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO). Teachers work with the SENCO to consider progress and adjust provision; support is linked to classroom learning rather than treated as a separate exercise.
Parents contribute their concerns and their knowledge of the child when additional support is considered. Individual Education Plans contain personal targets and are reviewed three times a year. This gives families a recurring opportunity to discuss whether support is working.
Adaptations include visual timetables, extra processing time and advance teaching of vocabulary. Speech and Language Service and Specialist Teaching Service are among the agencies supporting the school. These arrangements offer specific ways to respond to communication and learning needs, with the approach shaped around the individual child.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal coordinated admissions process for their child’s entry year and meet its deadline.
For the 2023/24 admission cycle, nursery attendance carried no priority in the primary Reception criteria. Warwickshire County Council was the admissions authority. Families should therefore treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
Nursery hours run from 9am to noon or 3pm. Children use the nursery entrance beside the Southlands turning circle, giving parents a specific drop-off point within the school site.
