Stories, conversation and growing independence give Woodside’s early years its character. The book nook provides a focus for reading, while activities encourage children to talk and explore. This is the nursery within Woodside CofE Primary School in Grendon, with children joining from age two.
In the inspection on 8 and 9 May 2024, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding. That judgement covers early years within the school. For parents considering the nursery, the useful detail is the combination of responsive teaching, children absorbed in learning and care that helped them settle.
The book nook brings familiar stories together with books that introduce children to different lives and backgrounds. In May 2024, children were developing their knowledge of classic tales through this space. Books therefore serve two purposes: building familiarity with stories and widening children’s understanding of other people.
Conversation carries substantial weight in the early years foundation stage (EYFS) here. In May 2024, activities prompted exchanges between children and adults, and communication and language were a strength. For a parent, that means learning includes expressing ideas and sustaining conversation, alongside becoming familiar with books.
Teaching responds to the children. Staff adjusted the curriculum to their needs, and children showed sustained attention, curiosity and a willingness to investigate independently in May 2024. These findings connect the learning activities with what children gained from them: opportunities to explore for themselves, supported by adults who understood when to adapt their teaching.
Settling matters before a child can make much of the learning on offer. In May 2024, children in early years became comfortable quickly because of the care they received. That provides a concrete reason to give the relationships with adults as much weight as the activities when considering this nursery.
A nursery teacher also holds the EYFS lead role, connecting nursery teaching with responsibility for early years. The responsive approach seen in May 2024 gives this structure practical meaning: adults understood children’s needs and changed the learning accordingly. Individual needs shaped the teaching.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions; a nursery place should never be taken as confirmation of the next school place.
Woodside announced wraparound provision from September 2026 for children from three years old, with hours of 7.30am to 5.30pm. These announced hours would extend the childcare window for eligible children, a practical consideration for working families. The age condition matters: nursery entry begins at two, while the announced wraparound offer is for children from three.
