Book-led learning, time to follow a child's own interests and daily phonics give Bearbrook Pre-School its shape. This is the nursery provision within Bearbrook Combined School on Fowler Road in Aylesbury. At the December 2023 inspection, the nursery class catered for children aged two to four. The school occupies extensive grounds, placing the provision within a larger school site.
The pre-school's stated aim is to develop independence and prepare children for their next stage. Its curriculum combines activities led by adults with periods of play chosen by children, so learning includes both planned teaching and opportunities to pursue an idea.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) organises learning here. In parent terms, that brings together language, movement, relationships, early reading and number work, alongside creativity and discovering how the world works. These areas connect rather than sitting in separate subject boxes: planning commonly starts with a book and extends across the curriculum.
Explore and Learn is the name for time when children choose activities independently. Alongside this, adults work directly with children, observe their interests and ask questions to shape the next learning step. The named Guerrilla Curriculum sits alongside planning that responds to the moment. That gives children's ideas a place within the teaching, rather than making every activity follow a fixed script.
Phonics takes place daily. In December 2023, Ofsted found that adults supported vocabulary development through play and conversation from pre-school onwards. Children also joined in with familiar rhymes, songs and stories. Enjoyment of early mathematics included spotting shapes, counting and recognising numbers, giving families concrete examples of learning through everyday activity.
Support for additional needs begins with the pre-school lead and practitioners identifying concerns early. A special educational needs coordinator (SENDCo) then helps plan the support. Early Support meetings bring parents into those conversations, giving families a role in deciding the next steps rather than leaving concerns solely with staff.
Tapestry records moments in children's learning, and families are encouraged to contribute examples from home. This connects what a child does in the setting with interests and achievements elsewhere. Across the school, communication also uses ClassDojo, email and text messages.
Safeguarding responsibilities include a pre-school lead who also holds a designated safeguarding role. The school and pre-school's procedures include listening to children, acting on welfare concerns and involving other agencies. Parental consent is sought before agency contact unless there are concerns about immediate significant harm.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through Buckinghamshire Council's coordinated admissions process by the deadline for their child's entry year.
For 2027/28, nursery attendance can confer conditional priority under criterion 7. Children must be on the Bearbrook Pre-School roll and attending for a minimum of 15 hours at application, with attendance of 90%+ unless exceptional circumstances are provided, such as family bereavement or hospitalisation. Earlier criteria still take precedence. This is an admissions consideration, not automatic transfer.
Nursery enquiries can go to the school office on 01296 488331 or office@bcsglt.co.uk. There is also a contact form for enquiries. The school is on Fowler Road, Aylesbury, HP19 7QP, giving families a clear starting point for contacting the provision.
