Sounds, rhymes and learning to manage feelings give Oak Green’s nursery its character. Provision for two- and three-year-olds sits within Oak Green School in Aylesbury, with Little Owls and Eagle Owls appearing in its early years timetable. This is a school nursery, with learning shaped around the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 15 and 16 July 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Adult-guided activities sit alongside play that children choose themselves. The EYFS curriculum brings learning and development together across seven areas, with exploration, conversation and growing independence threaded through the day. For a parent, that means looking beyond individual tasks to how children communicate, try ideas and learn alongside others.
STAIRS and ShREC are the named approaches used here. Adults use conversations and interactions during both guided activities and children’s own play. The curriculum also uses I can statements and 10 promises, giving learning specific goals alongside experiences intended to broaden children’s lives. In July 2025, those early years promises supported life skills and cultural experiences.
Early reading starts with listening. Nursery children encounter rhymes and sounds, establishing reading routines before the next stage of learning. Play also gives them opportunities to explore and connect experiences, while adults help extend their understanding. The emphasis is on participation and developing language, rather than a day described solely through formal lessons.
Emotional learning begins in early years: children practise recognising feelings and regulating their responses. In July 2025, children were meeting staff’s expectations for behaviour from Nursery onwards. These are useful foundations for joining group activities and managing everyday frustrations.
An EYFS SEND coordinator provides a specific contact within the school’s support structure. The school uses Individual Provision Maps for children at stages 2 to 4 on its SEND register, with plans shared with families three times a year. This gives parents recurring opportunities to discuss the support planned for their child.
Support and teaching checks. The July 2025 school-wide improvement actions concerned how precisely some activities were adjusted for SEND and how consistently misunderstandings were identified. These were school-wide concerns, rather than findings specifically attributed to Nursery. For families discussing additional needs, the practical focus is how activities will be adjusted and understanding checked.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Oak Green’s starting-school page links to Buckinghamshire’s online Reception application portal, so the next application is a distinct step from choosing nursery.
Classroom videos and getting-ready-for-Reception drop-in resources offer ways to prepare for that change. Familiarisation and admission remain separate questions: seeing the next classroom does not secure a place there.
Little Owls and Eagle Owls have matching session times. Morning arrival is at 8:40am, registration at 8:45am and collection at 11:45am. Afternoon arrival is at 12:25pm, registration at 12:30pm and collection at 3:30pm. These are two distinct parts of the day for families planning journeys and collection.
For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 01296 423895 or email office@oakgreen.bucks.sch.uk. During the school day, access to the site is controlled through the main office by an electronic entrance, with gates and doors secured. That provides a clear route for parents needing to reach the school outside session arrival times.
