Nursery at St Joseph's Catholic Infant School

An on-site pre-school within a Catholic infant school gives St Joseph's its defining shape: nursery provision alongside the school, with the two teams working closely together. On Hazell Avenue in Aylesbury, the setting belongs to St Joseph's Catholic Infant School, a member of St Thomas Catholic Academies Trust.
The school says it welcomes families across backgrounds and needs. Its Catholic character also shapes expectations for everyday behaviour, making faith part of the educational approach rather than simply a feature of the school's name.
Learning to communicate and learning to manage everyday routines sit together in the early years here. At the May 2025 inspection, Ofsted identified language development and enthusiasm for writing as features of early-years learning. For parents, that places children's growing ability to express themselves alongside the beginnings of written communication.
The Behaviour Curriculum is incorporated into early-years teaching. Adults demonstrate expected habits, then give children opportunities to practise them; lining up is one concrete example. Expectations are revisited each term and reinforced during the year, so learning how to take part in a group receives explicit teaching rather than being left to chance. Gospel Virtues provide the Catholic framework for this work.
A separate play area serves the Early Years classes. That gives younger children a distinct outdoor space within the school grounds. In May 2025, consistent routines began in the early years, with children learning cooperation and communication: useful foundations for participating in activities with other children.
Behaviour expectations take account of children's development and individual educational needs. The school recognises that eye contact can be uncomfortable for some children and requires staff to respond sensitively. That matters for families whose child needs a different approach to everyday social expectations.
For special educational needs and disabilities, the school's SENCO can be reached through the office. Autism Early Support's Parents' Portal is another resource the school directs families towards, offering parental guidance and resources.
Safeguarding responsibilities include a trained designated lead and recurring child-protection awareness training for staff who work with children. Staff and regular volunteers undergo suitability checks, including Disclosure and Barring Services checks.
Pre-school attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Buckinghamshire Council, following the normal application timetable. Close working between the pre-school and infant school does not remove that step.
Applications supported on faith grounds also require a Supplementary Form to be returned to the school office. Treat the nursery choice and the later school application as separate decisions.
Registration starts with returning a form to add a child's name to the pre-school list. Admission criteria are then used when places are allocated; joining the list is a step in the process, rather than an offer of a place.
The office handles enquiries on 01296 484618 or at office.sjis@stjosephsandstedwards.org. Visits to the school can be arranged through the office, giving families a direct route to meet the setting before applying.
