Nursery at Turnfurlong Infant School

Learning to talk, play together and explore gives Turnfurlong’s nursery its character. The provision serves children aged two to four and is managed by the school’s governing body, making it part of Turnfurlong Infant School in Aylesbury rather than a separate childcare provider.
In September 2023, Ofsted found that children flourished from their first nursery days, with exploration encouraged. Its early-years findings highlighted skilled adult interaction and a clear emphasis on communication and social development. Those are useful priorities for a child beginning to express ideas and share play with others.
Language and cooperation are central to the early-years curriculum. In September 2023, Ofsted highlighted the quality of adult interactions and the emphasis on early language and social skills; planned activities drew children into learning. Playing beside other children and learning to cooperate were explicit parts of that experience. For parents, the emphasis is on both expressing oneself and taking part with others.
The early-years curriculum had breadth, with communication receiving particular attention. Learning goals extended from the early years across the school, with vocabulary and content planned deliberately. This gives the nursery’s exploration an educational purpose: children are building language and understanding as they participate, rather than simply occupying their time.
Starting gradually is part of the nursery’s arrangements. For the September 2026 intake, new children began on staggered dates between 7 and 9 September; returning nursery children resumed on 4 September. That separated the returning group’s restart from the new intake’s first days.
Additional needs are addressed through the SENDCo and class teachers. For children arriving with needs already recognised, the team works with families, other settings and relevant agencies to support the change into nursery. Parents are also involved when staff first identify a need for extra help, with permission sought before appropriate referrals.
Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists are among the agencies whose advice can inform support. Plans use achievable, measurable targets with a timescale. Children remain part of their class and may receive individual or group interventions, while staff monitor progress and review provision. This gives families a defined process for discussing needs and checking how support is working.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. The school directs families to Buckinghamshire Council for that process, with admission arrangements governed by local authority policy. Treat the nursery decision and the later school application as separate commitments.
Nursery enquiries can go through the school’s online enquiry form, which has fields for contact details, a subject and a message. The school office can also be reached on 01296 489265 or at office@turnfurlong-inf.bucks.sch.uk. The address is Turnfurlong Lane, Aylesbury, HP21 7PL.
