At a Glance

Mucky Mondays in the forest and Tasteful Tuesdays for cooking give the nursery at St Joseph's Roman Catholic Primary School, Stacksteads, Bacup a practical, hands-on character. It belongs to a Catholic primary school on Huttock End Lane that welcomes children from age 3, regardless of faith or cultural background. Monthly EYFS Celebration Worship brings the school's religious character into early learning.

There is an important caution alongside those activities. The Ofsted report dated 28 April 2026 judged early years Needs attention. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning to play with others, growing independence and exploring with adult guidance. Here, that means resources children can use in different ways, activities involving materials to mould and sensory exploration, plus active maths and phonics lessons. The intention is to give children opportunities to make choices as well as take part in teaching led by adults.

Outdoor learning has specific spaces: a forest and an outdoor sensory area sit alongside classroom activities. Mucky Mondays takes learning into the forest; Tasteful Tuesdays develops cooking and baking skills. These give children practical ways to explore beyond their classroom. Pantomime trips and visits away from school add further experiences. Through Seeds and Gardeners, nursery children also play with buddies from Year 6, giving them contact with older children within the school.

Early learning needs attention. In April 2026, an ambitious learning programme was being taught unevenly, and staff expectations were too low. Progress in forming letters and numbers varied, mistakes went uncorrected for too long, and some children had insecure knowledge of letter sounds. These weaknesses affected the foundations of reading and writing. Developing staff expertise in teaching these skills was a specific improvement requirement. For families, the practical issue is how accurately early skills are taught and how promptly difficulties are addressed.

Care and Support

Adult conversations about learning were typically a strength in April 2026, helping children develop language and understand the world around them. Social learning also received attention: children practised sharing play and waiting for their turn. Most managed their personal needs independently, and many behaved well. These are useful foundations for taking part in a group.

Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities were supported successfully to participate alongside their friends. The school aims to work with families and outside professionals to identify needs and adjust support. Stay and play sessions involve families when parents can be invited into school, providing an opportunity to share children's learning experiences.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal Reception admissions process and meet its deadline. For September entry, the application route is Lancashire County Council's online service at lancashire.gov.uk. Choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions; taking part in school activities should not be treated as securing a later place.

Practical Information

Nursery applications are handled directly by the school. Parents can arrange a school visit by calling 01706 873177, with an appointment at a convenient time. This gives families a concrete first step towards considering the provision.

The school office can also be reached at bursar@st-josephs-bacup.lancs.sch.uk. Telephone office hours run from 8.30am to 3.45pm, with voicemail outside those hours. These are contact hours, rather than nursery session times.
