Nursery at Banstead Infant School and Nursery
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
Two-year-olds and four-year-olds share a room at Banstead’s nursery. This mixed-age model is its defining feature: younger children and those approaching school age spend their nursery time together, rather than in separate age-based rooms. The provision belongs to Banstead Infant School and Nursery, on The Horseshoe in Banstead, and accepts children from age two.
Squirrels covers children who are two or turn three during the relevant school year; Hedgehogs covers those turning four. These are application groupings within the blended provision, rather than evidence of separate classrooms. For families, the distinction matters: the age labels do not change the shared-room arrangement.
The school grounds include a large outdoor learning area for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). That gives the early years provision a physical setting beyond its indoor rooms. A woodland walk also forms part of the school’s outdoor learning and Forest School space; these are school facilities, rather than a promise of a particular nursery timetable.
Session length shapes the week. Children taking the first 15-hour pattern attend two six-hour days followed by a Wednesday morning. The alternative reverses the balance, beginning on Wednesday afternoon and continuing through Thursday and Friday. A 30-hour place spreads attendance across five weekdays. Parents choosing between them are choosing different weekly rhythms as well as different amounts of childcare.
An EYFS leader who also teaches nursery works alongside nursery practitioners. Qualifications within the team include Level 3 and Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA), while another practitioner is studying towards a Level 3 Early Years Educator qualification. This gives parents a concrete picture of the teaching and practitioner roles supporting the shared room.
Lunch can come from home or the school kitchen. Children may bring a healthy packed lunch, or families can choose a charged hot school meal cooked by the kitchen staff. Nursery lunch is excluded from the session provision, so families need to plan that separately from funded hours.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place, and there is no automatic transfer. Parents must make a separate application through the local authority where they live, by the normal deadline. Surrey residents use Surrey County Council’s admissions scheme; for September 2027 entry, the application deadline is 15 January 2027.
Attendance at the nursery gives no Reception priority under the 2027 entry arrangements. Priority categories cover children who are looked after or previously looked after, qualifying siblings and children of staff, followed by other applicants. Choose the nursery for the nursery experience, while making the Reception application separately.
For 2026-27, attendance is term-time only. The first 15-hour pattern runs Monday and Tuesday, 8:50am to 2:50pm, plus Wednesday, 8:50am to 11:50am. The second runs Wednesday, 12:20pm to 3:20pm, plus Thursday and Friday, 8:50am to 2:50pm. The 30-hour pattern runs Monday to Friday, 8:50am to 2:50pm. An optional charged top-up extends the main day to 3:20pm.
Fully funded places are offered within the main nursery hours. Families can pay for attendance where their child is not eligible for the relevant funding. Ask the school for current session, top-up and meal charges.
