At the July 2023 inspection, choosing resources for themselves was part of the early years experience at Woodmansterne Primary School. The emphasis was on children becoming independent participants in their learning, with adults helping them stay absorbed in what they were doing. That gave this school nursery a character built around both adult interaction and children's own choices.
The nursery is on the school site and was included in the inspection of 11 and 12 July 2023. Its place within the school matters: the early years provision is considered alongside the education that follows, while nursery attendance and admission to Reception remain separate questions.
In July 2023, the early years curriculum covered the different areas of learning, with ambition for every child to experience them. The focus was broader than an early start on reading alone. For parents, that means considering the whole learning experience, including opportunities for children to make choices and develop independence.
Adult interaction was a clear strength. Staff helped children become absorbed in their learning, while checks on what they understood and remembered informed teaching. Where understanding had gaps, teachers addressed them. The practical significance is attention to what a child has actually grasped, rather than simply moving through activities.
Resources also gave children scope to act for themselves. Children confidently chose what to use and took an active role in learning. This independence sat alongside adult support: choosing a resource and receiving help with learning were both features of the early years experience.
Many early years children made a positive start with reading. There was also a school-level caution in July 2023: some reading books did not fit pupils' knowledge of sounds closely enough, making fluent reading and understanding harder for some. That concern should sit alongside the positive early years findings, rather than being mistaken for a nursery-only judgement.
The July 2023 early years findings connect care with everyday teaching. Adults' interactions helped sustain children's engagement, and the emphasis on independence gave children opportunities to do things for themselves. For a parent, these are useful features to consider together: adult help supports participation, while access to resources supports choice.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal Reception admissions process and meet its deadline. Nursery attendance should therefore be treated as a choice about the nursery experience itself.
There is also an educational transition to consider. In July 2023, some subjects in the later primary curriculum did not connect sufficiently with early years learning. The improvement needed was to build more effectively on what children already knew. This was a concern about curriculum continuity beyond early years, separate from the question of securing a place.
