At a Glance

Gardening and early phonics gave Avanti Court’s nursery its clearest character at the June 2022 inspection: children began working with sounds when they joined Nursery, while early years outdoor activity included tending a garden. These are concrete experiences, combining an introduction to reading with practical exploration.

The nursery has 52 places within Avanti Court Primary School on Carlton Drive in Barkingside. Its Hindu-influenced educational setting welcomes families across faiths and world views. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Outstanding following the inspection on 7 and 8 June 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Play and focused teaching share the early years day. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach here combines adult-led learning with a Learning carousel, where children learn through play. Adults use questions and additional resources to take an interest further, giving play a teaching purpose rather than simply filling time between lessons.

Indoor and outdoor learning are both part of this approach. Communication and language, phonics, maths, singing and stories sit alongside opportunities for children to explore. Collective worship and meditation also feature in the early years programme, bringing the school’s faith character into the daily rhythm.

In June 2022, early years children enjoyed planned outdoor activities, including growing things in their garden. Reading had a similarly practical place in the day: phonics began in Nursery, and children revisited those skills beyond the dedicated teaching session. Extra reading help included individual work and interventions, with children receiving that support catching up quickly. For parents, the useful distinction is that early reading practice extended into everyday learning.

Care and Support

Support for special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) begins with information from parents and assessments when children start. Personal learning programmes can then respond to individual needs. The Early Years Intervention Team supports children in the nursery, adding specialist input to classroom support.

In June 2022, early years staff helped children with SEND progress rapidly. Communication with families also has a practical structure: individual SEND targets are reviewed at least three times a year, alongside parent meetings and opportunities to speak with the class teacher. Families can bring concerns to that teacher first, with the SEND coordinator involved when further support is needed.

School lunches are vegetarian and prepared on site. Dietary requirements can be discussed with staff, and meals can be adapted for specific allergies. Access to the school is controlled through an office-operated buzzer, and visitors must establish their identity and have someone accompany them.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline.

For children with SEND, transition between classes includes a summer meeting involving the existing and incoming teachers, support staff, specialist outreach and the SEND coordinator. This transfers knowledge about a child’s needs and support. It is a care arrangement, not an admissions advantage.

Practical Information

For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 020 8551 9489. Uniform applies from pre-school onwards: white polo shirts and grey trousers are among the compulsory items, with embroidered compulsory clothing bought through Brigade Clothing. Items that do not specify a school logo can come from a supplier of the family’s choice. Label clothing and shoes clearly so children can identify their belongings.

Travel needs planning. There is no school parking, and local restrictions affect the journey by car. Walking or public transport are encouraged; families driving should allow for parking away from the school and completing the journey on foot.

FAQs
