Nursery at Birkwood Primary School

Stories, conversation and children’s interests shape Birkwood’s early years approach. Its nursery is Foundation Stage One, part of Birkwood Primary School on Darfield Road in Cudworth, Barnsley. The emphasis on spoken language gives families a clear sense of the learning priorities: adults use interaction to help children develop their ideas and put them into words.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 10 and 11 December 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for learning. At Birkwood, themes and selected books give teaching a starting point, while children’s interests help determine where it goes next. For parents, the practical distinction is that a theme can prompt learning rather than dictate every activity. Adult conversations are part of that process, with spoken language an explicit priority.
The nursery’s curriculum resources include the FS1 Reading Spine, FS1 Milestones and Poetry Basket. These give families useful points of reference for the books, learning steps and poetry associated with the early years curriculum. They also provide specific starting points for discussing learning with the team.
Physical space supports this approach. Across Foundation Stage, 3 indoor areas have been remodelled and outdoor facilities developed for the youngest children. In December 2024, children enjoyed learning and playing outdoors in the refurbished early years area. Learning was not confined to indoor activities.
Curriculum precision. In December 2024, children progressed well through most learning areas, but some lacked sufficiently clear decisions about the knowledge children should acquire. Activities did not consistently serve those learning goals, making knowledge harder to secure. This matters alongside the flexible approach: following an interest still needs a clear learning purpose.
Language development includes children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). In December 2024, early years children with SEND were acquiring vocabulary and developing speech alongside their peers. This places communication within the shared learning experience.
For families with concerns about development, the school’s SEND information directs them to the deputy headteacher. The school also identifies a SENDCo and Inclusion Leader, giving parents a defined route for raising support needs.
Attending Birkwood’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application for full-time school through the normal admissions process. The admissions page directs parents to the local authority for further information and stresses completing the application when it arrives.
Treat that application as a separate task, even if your child already attends nursery. Familiarity with Birkwood does not remove the need to apply.
The school office handles enquiries from families. Contact it at contact@birkwood.org.uk or on 01226 710447. Birkwood’s address is Darfield Road, Cudworth, Barnsley, S72 8HG.
Prospective parents can arrange a visit with the headteacher, including a tour and an opportunity to ask questions. This provides a direct way to discuss the nursery’s approach and see its place within the school.
No. Birkwood explicitly warns that nursery attendance does not guarantee a place. A separate application for full-time school is required.
