Nursery at Burton Road Primary School

Core books, familiar rhymes and carefully chosen vocabulary give Burton Road’s nursery its character. This is a nursery class within the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with morning, afternoon and 30-hour places. Its learning programme combines themes with stories, giving children repeated opportunities to hear new words and use them in play.
Nursery learning has its own curricular goals, each broken into four milestones. That gives the team smaller steps to work towards, rather than treating readiness for the next stage as one distant target.
Books provide a thread through the learning. The EYFS curriculum draws on Development Matters and the EYFS Statutory Framework: in practical terms, staff plan the knowledge and skills children will develop, then combine adult-guided activities with opportunities to explore through play. Core experiences, songs and rhymes sit alongside those activities. Vocabulary is selected around the themes and texts, so learning a story also means building the language to discuss it.
Read, Write Inc Phonics and White Rose Maths are named within the EYFS programme as daily sessions. These bring structured work on reading sounds and early mathematics into the broader play-based approach. The nursery also has its own collection of core songs and rhymes, keeping spoken language part of the curriculum rather than reserving it for formal teaching.
Practical exploration features in the early-years science adaptations. Children can plant seeds, observe weather and use equipment at an investigation station, with adults helping them explore cause and effect. Word mats and advance introduction of vocabulary support participation. These examples connect new language with something children can handle or observe.
In October 2023, Ofsted found that early-years adults extended children’s understanding through questioning, encouraged an expanding vocabulary and taught number patterns through purposeful activities. Stories, poetry and rhymes were also part of that experience. The benefit is a combination of conversation and deliberate teaching, with adults helping children explain what they are learning.
Early-years children received substantial care and support in October 2023. They also practised kindness and friendship, making social learning part of their education.
For children with SEND, the school uses School Focus Plans to identify support needs and guide adaptations. Planning can change daily where necessary. Parents take part in termly reviews, and an agreed home-school contact book can help keep strategies connected between home and the classroom. These are school-wide arrangements, relevant to discussing an individual child’s nursery support.
Communication. At the October 2023 inspection, some parents across the school raised concerns about information on school changes and how their concerns had been handled. Ofsted asked the school to keep all parents informed regularly and promptly. This was a school-wide concern; discuss with the nursery team how updates and concerns will be communicated.
Attending Burton Road’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
The nursery’s curricular milestones concern learning preparation. They do not replace an admissions application or establish an entitlement to a place.
Morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am; afternoon sessions are 12.30pm to 3.30pm. The option labelled 30 hours sessions runs from 8.30am to 3.30pm. Those different collection times matter when matching nursery to a family’s working day.
Nursery applications go online through Barnsley Council’s school nursery places service. General enquiries go to the school office on 01226 288679 or info@burtonrdps.org. This gives families separate routes for submitting an application and contacting the school.
