A weekly Forest Session gives Greenfield’s youngest children a regular reason to take learning outdoors. This is the nursery provision within Greenfield Primary School on Cherry Tree Street in Hoyland, with room for 26 children in each session. Children can join from the term following their third birthday. Morning, afternoon and combined patterns give families a choice of how nursery fits into the week, subject to availability.
Outdoor learning has a regular place in the early years foundation stage (EYFS). Each week, EYFS children take part in a Forest Session. Their curriculum also supports physical development.
A summer 2023 minibeast hunt shows what that can mean in practice. Children searched beneath logs and rocks, recording discoveries on clipboard lists. The forest area also offered swings and a mud slide: children practised making the swings move and helped one another climb slippery ground. Observation, coordination and cooperation came together in the same activity.
Stories have travelled outdoors too. For World Book Day in 2022, nursery children shared books in small groups and used an outdoor library. Making bookmarks involved threading ribbon and handling a hole punch, combining a book celebration with practical hand skills.
Past nursery science activities included circuits made with play dough and LEDs, alongside experiments with oil and coloured water. Children tested what happened when wires were removed or replaced and predicted whether water would sink or float. These examples show learning through handling materials, asking questions and trying an idea out.
Settling starts before the first regular session. After a place is offered, families receive arrangements for an induction meeting and nursery visits. There is also a home visit, during which the child’s birth certificate is checked. That creates opportunities for contact between home and nursery before attendance begins.
Across the school, parent communication includes a parents’ evening each term and a summer written report. Teachers can also be contacted between meetings. Children receiving SEN Support or holding an Education, Health and Care Plan have additional reviews arranged at mutually suitable times, giving families further opportunities to discuss their child’s needs.
Barnsley’s Local Offer brings together information about education, healthcare and community support for children with SEND. It also covers rights and entitlements, making it a useful companion to conversations about support at school.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Choosing nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions; a nursery offer should not be treated as an offer for the next stage.
The booking choices are five morning sessions, five afternoon sessions or ten sessions across the week. The combined option includes a charged lunch period. Contact the school for current charges.
Morning and afternoon sessions each last three hours. Gates open at 8:45am. Confirm current start and collection times with the office before arranging other childcare, as published timings differ by five minutes.
Visits can be arranged through the school office, by telephone on 01226 743468, email at office@greenfieldprimaryschool.co.uk or in person. Once a child is two, families can join the nursery waiting list online or through the office. Places are allocated by age rather than the order in which names are added.
Children are admitted from the term after their third birthday. Families can add a child to the waiting list from age two, but this does not allow an earlier start.
The nursery can accommodate 26 children per session.
Families can request five mornings, five afternoons or ten sessions across the week. The school tries to accommodate session preferences wherever possible. The ten-session option includes a lunch period that incurs a charge.
No. Reception requires a separate application through the normal admissions process, by the applicable deadline.
