Language gives Holy Trinity’s early years its clearest character: children learn a deliberately chosen vocabulary to help them communicate and develop their language skills. The nursery belongs to Holy Trinity Catholic and Church of England School on Carlton Road in Barnsley, within its primary phase. Children can start at age 3. The school occupies a purpose-built building opened in 2012 and combines Catholic and Church of England traditions.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 23 and 24 April 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. For parents, the useful detail behind it is the emphasis on language and the positive start children make to learning.
Two sessions shape the nursery timetable. Mornings run from 8:45 to 11:45, while afternoons begin at 12:30 and finish at 15:30. Children attending all day have a lunch period from 11:30 to 12:45. These timings give families distinct morning and afternoon routines to plan around.
The nursery sits within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the school’s curriculum stage for ages 3–5. Communication and early reading are concrete priorities. In April 2025, children’s language development benefited from carefully selected vocabulary, and reading teaching began in early years with trained staff. The practical value is a focus on the words children understand and use as they begin learning to read.
Read Write Inc is the phonics scheme used in Foundation Stage. The primary phase also uses a Mastery approach, which the school describes as developing understanding that lasts and can be applied in different situations. Its emphasis includes recalling knowledge, reasoning and solving problems. Christian practice is part of school life too, with collective worship taking place daily.
Inclusion is a responsibility shared by all staff. Holy Trinity aims to give children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) equal access to academic and social learning, and says parents’ and carers’ views are taken into account. For a family discussing additional support, that places participation and parent involvement alongside learning needs.
Operation Encompass connects school Key Adults with police and Barnsley Metropolitan District Council teams to support children affected by domestic abuse. The purpose is to help children feel secure and receive appropriate support, linking school care with agencies beyond the classroom.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal Reception admissions process and meet the normal deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions: a nursery place is not an offer of a school place for the following stage.
Holy Trinity accommodates nursery children using 15 or 30 hours of free provision. Drop-off and collection for both nursery sessions use the Nursery Gate, giving families a specific entrance to use rather than the school’s main reception.
