At a Glance

Dancing and messy activities give Hoyland Common’s nursery a practical, playful character. Children can join from age three, beginning their education within Hoyland Common Primary School on Sheffield Road in Barnsley. This is the school’s own nursery provision, with early years forming part of the wider primary setting.

At the Ofsted inspection on 5 and 6 July 2022, early years provision received a Good judgement. That judgement covered early years within the school; it should not be read as a separate nursery inspection. The detail matters as much as the grade.

The Nursery Day

Movement and messy activities are concrete parts of nursery life. They give families a picture of children taking part physically and exploring through practical activity, rather than simply sitting through lessons.

In July 2022, the early years curriculum was still at an initial stage of development. Its purpose was to prepare children for later learning, but the connection between some activities and children’s progress across the curriculum needed to be clearer. For parents, the useful question is what a particular activity helps their child learn.

The classroom environment also needed attention. In July 2022, it provided too little stimulation for developing vocabulary, language and reading. Opportunities for children to learn independently were insufficiently planned, and adults needed to make better use of the surroundings to develop confidence and participation. These were substantial concerns about the everyday learning experience. They make the use of classroom space, conversation and independent activity useful points to explore during a visit.

Care and Support

Adult relationships were a positive feature of early years in July 2022. Staff treated children warmly and prompted them to contribute ideas and speak about their learning. That gives the care picture an encouraging element, while keeping it distinct from the concerns about how activities and classroom resources supported learning.

For communication, parents can contact their child’s class teacher through the year group inboxes. The Foundation Stage contact includes HCPS.FS1@hcacademytrust.education. Urgent enquiries, including safeguarding matters, should go directly to the school by telephone, giving families a clear route when a message needs prompt attention.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no admissions priority. Families must make a separate Reception application through their home local authority, even if their child already attends the nursery.

For September 2027 entry, the application deadline is 15 January 2027. Barnsley residents can use www.barnsley.gov.uk/schooladmissions. Treat this as a separate family task: choosing the nursery does not complete the application for the next stage.

Practical Information

The school office accepts enquiries by phone on 01226 369640, by email at hcpsoffice@hcacademytrust.education, or through a contact form. Prospective parents can arrange a school tour with the headteacher. A visit gives families an opportunity to discuss the nursery’s everyday learning experience and see how the classroom supports children’s activity.
