Exploration, persistence and children's own ideas give Hunningley's nursery its direction. This is the nursery within Hunningley Primary Academy in Barnsley, with places offered from the term after a child's third birthday, as vacancies arise. The nursery describes kindness and sensitive adult interactions as its starting point, allowing children to develop at their own pace. Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 21 and 22 March 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Play has a clear learning purpose here. The nursery's approach to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) emphasises exploration, sustained involvement and thinking for oneself. Children are encouraged to investigate, use familiar knowledge in their play and attempt something new. Persistence matters too: the aim is for children to stay involved, try again when something proves difficult and enjoy completing what they set out to do.
Independent thought sits alongside that perseverance. Children are encouraged to develop ideas, connect what they know and choose how to tackle an activity. For parents, this means the emphasis extends beyond completing a task to how a child approaches it.
Language development received skilled adult support in the early years at the March 2023 inspection. Staff prompted children to speak and expand their vocabulary. Children sustained their attention during play and adult-led learning, with suitable activities helping them engage with the curriculum. These interactions give language development a practical place in the day: children have adult help to express their thinking while they learn.
A nursery class teacher works within an early years team that includes teaching assistants. The nursery encourages parents to keep talking with staff and to try suggested activities at home, linking family involvement with children's learning. Families also receive school letters by email, covering information and events.
Food includes daily fruit, while milk is free for children under five who are signed up for it. Taylor Shaw provides school meals, with hot and cold choices, vegetables and a vegetarian option. Families should obtain current meal charges from the school when planning attendance.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school's support process involves parental consent and consultation. Assess-Plan-Do-Review brings together targets, progress checks and decisions about the next steps. This gives families a role in reviewing support rather than treating it as a fixed arrangement. Nursery parent resources also direct families to Barnsley Speech and Language Therapy Service and toilet-training advice.
Attending Hunningley's nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Barnsley Council's normal online primary admissions route and meet the deadline for their child's admission round. Treat that application as a separate task when planning the move into school, even if your child already attends nursery.
Hunningley offers 30 hours to all nursery children. The nursery day starts at 8:45am, and its entrance is on the school's left-hand side, reached through the community room. This is the route families need for nursery access.
Nursery applications go online to Barnsley Council, and families can arrange a visit through the school office. General enquiries can be made on 01226 284867 or by emailing enquiries@hunningley.org.
Uniform combines a white or pale blue polo shirt with either navy jogging clothes and a logo jumper, or black trousers with a navy logo jumper or cardigan. Footwear must be black shoes or flat black boots, with no trainers or other visible colours. A child collection form allows parents to add another person authorised to collect their child, helping families organise collection arrangements in advance.
