Above the Clouds takes its name from Jack and the Beanstalk, and stories shape more than the nursery’s identity. Books prompt conversation, new vocabulary and activities children can explore for themselves. This is Joseph Locke Primary School’s FS1 provision, on Shaw Street in Barnsley, within its Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
Language has a clear place in the day. In June 2024, Ofsted found that early years children established routines promptly and benefited from a focus on language and the beginnings of reading. That gives families a useful picture of the foundations being built here.
Adult-guided learning sits alongside exploration and play. The EYFS approach brings together children’s social, physical and intellectual development; Development Matters helps staff plan around their changing interests and needs. In practice, this means learning to talk with other children, manage feelings and make decisions as well as beginning to read and count.
The nursery’s Spring Term 1 plan gives the detail. Carpet time and small groups support listening and conversation, while stories help children discuss emotions. A word linked to the class text is introduced each day, giving children vocabulary to use in their own play. Floppy’s Phonics sessions include rhyme, sounds in the environment and the beginnings of blending short words.
Physical learning is practical. Children practise rolling and kicking balls, while classroom pencils, scissors and paintbrushes give smaller movements their own attention. The spring plan also includes comparing numbers from 0 to 5, investigating ice as it melts and mixing colours. These are concrete ways to connect language, movement and discovery.
Indoor and outdoor learning are both part of the wider early years approach. Its examples include looking after a rabbit and baking bread, connecting learning with everyday experience. Books also travel home: library time falls on Monday, and the Going Home Reading Library opens after each session, making shared reading part of the nursery routine.
The staff structure includes a nursery teacher and nursery nurse. Parents can follow their child’s learning through Evidence Me, the online learning journal, which provides updates to look through together at home.
Starting nursery has its own introduction events. The July 2026 calendar included a New Nursery Starters Singalong on 3 July and a Nursery New Starters Transition Picnic on 7 July. These were opportunities to become familiar with nursery before starting, rather than a promise of a particular settling timetable.
Children using the eligible 30-hour arrangement can remain for lunch between sessions. Across the school, ISS (Integrated Service Solutions) supplies catering, with menus generally changing each term. For developmental concerns, the school’s SENDco is the contact; the SEND information covers communication, learning, emotional needs and sensory or physical needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. The school’s application guidance directs parents to Barnsley Council’s admissions department and requires an application form for children starting Reception. Treat that application as a separate task from nursery enrolment.
