Learning together and putting new ideas to use give Kexborough’s early years provision its character. In April 2025, children were developing the confidence to use what they knew across different activities, supported by adults who understood their individual learning needs. That combination matters: exploration has a purpose, and support responds to the child.
This is Kexborough Primary School’s own nursery provision, within the primary school on Ballfield Lane in Kexborough, Barnsley. The focus here is its youngest children’s experience of learning and care.
Exploration involves learning alongside other children. In April 2025, early years activities gave children opportunities to work together and extend their understanding. The emphasis was on using knowledge as well as acquiring it. For parents, that means looking beyond whether a child can recall something: children were becoming confident enough to apply their learning in different contexts.
Adults’ understanding of individual children shaped this work. Staff knew their learning needs and used that understanding to help them develop. This gives the activities a clear relationship to children’s progress, rather than treating participation alone as the goal. Working with others also gives children opportunities to test and develop their understanding together.
Daily phonics begins in early years. In April 2025, staff delivered these sessions consistently and had the training and knowledge to do so. A regular approach gives early reading a clear place alongside exploration and collaborative learning.
Relationships with adults are a substantial part of the early years experience. In April 2025, children benefited from caring interactions with staff, alongside support informed by their learning needs. Understanding the individual child mattered to both the atmosphere and the learning.
That connection between care and teaching is useful for families to consider. Adults were using their knowledge of children to help their development, while children were gaining confidence in applying what they had learned. The benefit was visible in what children could do, as well as in the support around them. These are findings about the school’s early years provision at that time, rather than a separate nursery grade.
Reception admission is separate. Attending Kexborough’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions process and meet the applicable deadline.
Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as two decisions. A child’s nursery attendance should not be taken as confirmation of their next school place; completing the separate application remains essential.
