At a Glance

Storytelling, dough and outdoor exploration give Owlets, Laithes Primary School’s FS1 nursery, its character. Children start in the term after their third birthday. The nursery belongs to the Early Years Unit, within a building that also houses The Hub SEND provision, so its place within the school is physically distinct from the older primary classes.

In May 2026, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision to meet the Strong standard. That judgement covers early years as a whole. Language development, independent learning and clear routines were strengths, giving parents useful evidence about the provision that includes the nursery.

The Nursery Day

Books provide a daily thread. FS1 has story time every day, while Magic of Stories runs two to three times a week. Familiar books are revisited, helping children join in and become more confident with language. Helicopter stories brings children’s own storytelling together with drama: speaking becomes something they can act out, as well as practise in conversation.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) connects play with developing communication, movement and early learning skills. In FS1, Squiggle while you wiggle and Dough disco support preparation for writing. Mark-making materials give children ways to experiment before formal written work, while staff track pencil grip and adjust support to individual development.

White Rose maths guides learning in FS1 alongside Master the Curriculum. Songs and stories help make mathematical ideas accessible; counters and numicon give children objects to explore and manipulate. Maths extends beyond a single activity area, allowing children to practise ideas through their play.

Outside, bikes, a woodland area and a trim trail offer space for larger movements and exploration. Dough and loose materials are used outdoors as well as inside. The May 2026 early years findings also described resources children could select independently, including writing and maths materials across classroom areas. Choice has a practical purpose here: children can return to a skill and try it in another activity.

Care and Support

Predictable routines and supportive adult relationships help children feel secure. In May 2026, early years staff were effective at extending children’s speech through conversation and recognising additional needs promptly. Adjustments to learning helped children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) participate and progress.

Support can begin before a child joins. Early years staff communicate with previous settings to understand individual needs. Parents’ knowledge also contributes to planning: where a School Support Plan is needed, the family, class teacher and SEND coordinator develop it together, with progress reviewed at least termly. This gives families a continuing role in decisions about support.

For concerns, the class teacher is the first contact, with the SEND coordinator available for more detailed advice. Physical access includes flat entrances and wide doorways, useful considerations for children or accompanying adults with mobility needs.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process. For the 2026–2027 admission arrangements, nursery attendance gives no oversubscription priority: the criteria cover children in or previously in care, siblings and distance, alongside required admission where an EHCP names the school.

Barnsley families apply through the council’s online admissions system. The deadline for September 2026 entry was 15 January 2026. Transition support is a separate matter: personalised plans may include extra visits, meetings between staff and opportunities for parents to meet the receiving team. Familiarity supports the move; it does not determine allocation.

Practical Information

Morning nursery sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoon sessions run from 12:15pm to 3:20pm. These are different from the wider school timetable, so families should plan collection around the nursery session they use. Early Years Unit doors open at 8:45am.

For the Spring and Summer 2027 nursery rounds, parents can apply through the School Admissions parent portal from 1 September. For the Autumn 2026 round, contact admissions directly. Parents can apply from the term after their child turns two; this is the application stage, rather than the nursery starting age. Admissions support is available on 01226 773677.
