Practical maths indoors and outside, with language woven into learning: these are the defining features of Mapplewell’s early years provision. The nursery belongs to Mapplewell Primary School on Greenside Avenue in Barnsley and offers part-time places from the term after a child’s third birthday, subject to space. Families choose five mornings or five afternoons each week.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 27 and 28 February 2024. That judgement covers the early years stage within the school, rather than a separate nursery inspection. For parents, the strongest evidence concerns how children learn, especially their vocabulary and practical use of mathematical ideas.
A morning runs from 8:40 am to 11:40 am; an afternoon runs from 12:25 pm to 3:25 pm. The choice is between a morning pattern and an afternoon pattern across the week, giving families a consistent half-day arrangement to plan around.
Within the early years foundation stage (EYFS), the February 2024 findings describe children putting early maths into practice in both the classroom and outdoor areas. Learning therefore extends beyond the indoor classroom. Staff also use opportunities throughout learning to build children’s language, helping them acquire words alongside the knowledge those words describe.
Sharing and taking turns are part of early years learning too. These are practical skills for joining activities with other children, alongside the language and mathematical foundations. The emphasis is on developing knowledge children can use as their education continues.
For families with concerns about special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), the first contact is the child’s class teacher. A discussion with the special educational needs coordinator can then be arranged. This gives parents a clear starting point for raising concerns.
The school aims to identify additional needs early, adapt learning to individual needs and keep parents involved in their child’s progress. Its safeguarding team includes designated leads and deputy leads, who can be contacted through the school telephone number.
Nursery attendance gives neither preferential treatment nor an automatic Reception place at Mapplewell. Families must make a separate school application through Barnsley Authority. Applications are made in the Autumn Term for entry the following September, using Barnsley’s primary school admissions route.
Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions. A place in the nursery does not remove the need to apply again or guarantee the outcome.
Tours can be arranged during the school year by appointment through the office on 01226 381273. General enquiries can also be sent to mail@mapplewellprimary.org.uk.
Uniform applies to nursery children. It includes a blue polo shirt with a navy sweatshirt or cardigan and black or grey trousers, shorts or a skirt, according to the school’s uniform options. Generic clothing is accepted, and donated, washed uniform can be obtained from the office. Shoes must be black with a secure fastening.
School oversight. In February 2024, the school was asked to check more regularly whether its improvement work achieved the intended effects. This was a school-wide action, rather than a nursery-specific criticism, and concerns how leaders evaluate changes to provision.
Children can start at the beginning of the term after their third birthday, provided a place is available.
Morning sessions run from 8:40 am to 11:40 am, and afternoon sessions from 12:25 pm to 3:25 pm. Children attend either five mornings or five afternoons per week.
